84. FofS Research Priorities
- January 6th- VPRs office asks faculties to
identify 3 areas of research strength for input
to the development of a new UofC Strategic
Research Plan - January 14th - faculties allowed to identify more
than 3 areas of research strength - Late January - Heads were asked to identify areas
of research strengths, emerging strengths and
interdisciplinary research projects - Jan./Feb - two additional meetings were held with
Heads and members of each department to identify
FofS research priorities and sub-categories
within each priority - Mid February final wording for the FofS
priorities and sub-categories within each
priority was determined - February 28 submission of our priorities to the
VPRs office

115. Research Services Office - Update
- meet biweekly with RSO senior managers
- (Glenn McMurray, Jamie Day, Lorna Very, Michelle
Rempel, Lori Foster and Neil Campbell) - Betty Tear (MTST) and I work with RSO to solve
various issues, concerns, etc. - Glen McMurray implemented two review processes
- 1) Phase II Solutions to address the needs of
researchers on the post award side - 2) Institutional Research Information System
(IRIS)Â to improve and standardize pre-award and
compliance processes - In addition, there are two University initiatives
for reviewing the operations of central services - 1) Process Improvements (for HR, Payroll,
purchasing, etc) - 2) Innovate Support Systems (IS2) with
PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) - Any enterprise process issues that can be
successfully addressed by these projects will
have a significant impact on the types of
services RSO could deliver in the future. - RSO are also developing measurable service
delivery standards
125. Research Services Office - Changes
136. Research Institutes Policy and Procedures
- The following Institutes now are under the
jurisdiction of the Faculty of Science - Biogeoscience Institute
- Institute for Biocomplexity and Informatics (IBI)
- Institute for Quantum Information Science (IQIS)
- Institute for Space Imaging Science (ISIS)
- A new policy that defines the principles for the
establishment, review, renewal, and winding down
of research institutes was developed. - A set of procedures to implement the Research
Institutes Policy was developed.
147. Future Activities Monitor Bill 27
- Bill 27 The Alberta Research and Innovation Act
tabled March 18 - http//aet.alberta.ca/research/system/mandates/fra
mework.aspx go to questions and answers - What would happen to the existing organizations?
- The intent of the Alberta Research and Innovation
Act is to enable the Government of Alberta to
create one new advisory body and four new,
board-governed provincial corporations by
transitioning the following existing
organizations - the Alberta Science and Research Authority
- 2-6) AETs five research institutes Energy, Life
Sciences, Agriculture, Forestry, and Information
and Communications Technology (ICT) - 7) the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Science
and Engineering Research (operating as Alberta
Ingenuity) - 8) the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical
Research (AHFMR) - 9) the Alberta Research Council Inc. (a
provincial corporation owned by the Crown) - 10) iCORE Inc. (a provincial corporation owned by
the Crown)
157. Future Activities Monitor Bill 27
Bill 27 The Alberta Research and Innovation Act
tabled March 18 http//aet.alberta.ca/research/sys
tem/mandates/framework.aspx go to questions
and answers What would happen to the existing
organizations? 1) new organization focused on
technology commercialization or bringing
technology to market Alberta Research Council,
Alberta Ingenuity, and related programs and
initiatives from Albertas ICT strategy. 2) new
bioindustries provincial corporation Alberta
Agricultural Research Institute, Alberta Forestry
Research Institute, and Alberta Life Sciences
Institute. 3) The Alberta Energy Research
Institute would be transformed into the energy
and environment corporation. 4) A renewed AHFMR
would continue as the new provincial corporation
with a stronger focus on strategic health
research. iCORE would be integrated into the
provinces funding of research capacity in
post-secondary institutions. The specific model
is still to be worked out, but the intent is to
bring our research and innovation framework
closer to Campus Alberta, further integrating the
provincial knowledge-based economy.
