Title: MINERnA Prototype Studies

1
MINERnA Prototype Studies
  • Robert Bradford
  • Jupiter/MINERnA Group Meeting
  • November 16, 2005

2
Overview
  • Introduce Dan Ruggiero
  • Reminder about the prototypes
  • Goals for the next 8 weeks
  • Calendar
  • Comments/feedback...

3
Dan Ruggiero
  • Grew up near Albany, NY
  • Went to Albany State in Materials Science before
    grad school at UofR.
  • Been an HEP technician for 15 years worked on
    CMS for last 9 years.

4
A little more...
  • Hes a swimmer.
  • Naval reserves for 4 years assigned to mine
sweeper. Has already removed mines from 15X.
  • Likes Thai food and most things spicy.
  • Helped with the CMS garden at FNAL, producing a
    bumper crop of rutabagas.

5
Whats he doing in Rochester?
  • Enjoying last bits of fall in the Northeast.
  • Hiding from the rutabagas.
  • Dan will be at UofR for the next 2 months to help
    plan the MINERnA assembly process.
  • Well use wooden prototypes to mock up module
    assembly

6
A Basic Module
Steel Frame
Mounting ears
Lead Collar
Fiber connectors and mounting hardware
Scintillator planes or calorimeter targets
Load-bearing spacer
Scintillator for calorimeters
WLS fibers
7
Fleshing out assembly...
  • Will mock up module assembly with wooden
    prototypes.
  • We need to decide
  • Exact order of steps
  • Hardware stock and specialty
  • Tooling
  • Handling issues
  • Risk for technicians and detector components

8
Basic module assembly
  • Receive frame from WBS8 on strongback
  • Inspect frame before scintillator installation
  • Install mounts for clear fiber connectors
  • Install OD scintillators
  • .....
  • We still have to decide
  • Is the obvious procedure going to work?
  • What ordering makes most efficient use of
    labor?
  • What are the detailed steps required along the
    way?
  • Is the layout of assembly space properly
    optimized?

9
Nuts and bolts
  • Basic design work is not detailed at the
    nut-and-bolt level yet.
  • We need to
  • Decide what hardware/connectors we will use the
    hold the parts together.
  • Identify what pieces need to be specially
    designed and fabricated.
  • Step through the assembly procedure with mocks of
all hardware (including specialty pieces) 2-3
    times to evaluate their performance.
  • By January, provide conceptual design of pieces
    to Bob Flight.

10
Tooling
  • Need to idenfity
  • What tools well need
  • What tools does UofR already own and what will
    need to be purchased
  • Do we need to design any custom jigs?
  • What safety training will be required
  • FNAL guidelines/classes
  • What specific training will we need to provide
    techs

11
Handling/Risk
  • We will evaluate
  • What safety gear is needed?
  • How safe is the procedure?
  • How can we minimize risk to techs and components?
  • What are QA strategies for finished modules?

12
Other points
  • Will be basis of our preparations for next
summers full module construction at FNAL
  • Well provide feedback to other task groups based
    on our experience.
  • Will start to plan module mapper
  • Will report to collaboration in January.
  • PMTs
  • will remodel PMT rack based on new frame
    dimensions
  • finalize maintenance/handling procedures for
    PMTs
  • provide updated clear cable lengths

13
Schedule
Prep for initial assembly mockup
Prep for initial assembly mockup

14
Schedule
Initial mockup and evaluation
Second mockup and evaluation
Revisit PMT rack
Revisit PMT rack
15
Schedule
Final assembly mockup
Evaluation/report to collaboration
16
Summary/Conclusions
  • Dans very experienced and will be very useful
over the course of the next 2 months
  • Assembly should be well thought out and practiced
by the end of the studies
  • Ill write an engineering document after its all
    over.....
