1
THE CITY OF JERUSALEM
  • By Ryan Bitzegaio

2
GEOGRAPHY
  • Jerusalem is located in modern-day Israel.
  • It can be found between the Mediterranean Sea and
the northern tip of the Dead Sea.

3
A RELIGIOUS CENTER
  • Jerusalem is a sacred religious center to the
    major monotheistic religions Judaism,
    Christianity, and Islam.
  • Religious pilgrims flock to the Holy City by the
    millions each year.

4
GENERAL HISTORY
  • Archeological findings suggest a settlement in
Jerusalem may have appeared as early as the 3rd
    millennium BC.
  • The first mention of the city in historic sources
begins in the 2nd millennium BCE.
  • Over the years, Jerusalem has gone by many names
Urusalim, Salem, Mount Moriah, Adonai Urah,
Jebus, Jerusalem, Zion, the City of David, and
    Ariel.

5
EARLY HISTORY
  • 1052 BC - David defeated the Jebusites to conquer
    Jerusalem.
  • 1015 BC - Solomon began the construction of a
house for the Name of the Lord. With 183,300
workers on the project, the Temple still took
    seven years to complete.
  • 979 BC - After Solomons death split Israel,
Jerusalem became the capital of the Southern
    Kingdom.
  • 979-586 BC - Twenty kings take reign over
Jerusalem. One of the twenty, Manasseh, ruled for
    55 years.

6
EARLY HISTORY
  • 586 BC - Nebuchadnezzar completely destroys the
city and the Temple, and Jerusalem was left to
    lie dormant for 70 years.
  • 539 - Cyrus, the king of Persia, ordered the
rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem.
  • 167 BC - The Temple is converted to a showplace
    for idols by the Greeks.
  • 40 BC - The Romans army, 30,00 infantry and 6,000
calvary strong, take Jerusalem and burn the city
    and the Temple.

7
THE CHRISTIAN ERA
  • 325 AD - Constantine makes Christianity the
official religion of the Roman Empire and the
basilica of the Holy Sepulchre was built in
    Jerusalem.
  • 330-640 AD - (The Byzantine Era) Many Christian
    monuments were constructed in Jerusalem.

8
THE FALL OF CHRISTIANITY AND THE CRUSADES
  • Seljuk tribes invaded Jerusalem at the end of the
11th century and took over the city.
  • 1095-1187 AD - The Crusaders manage to regain
control for roughly 200 years. The overtaking of
the city was accompanied by the massacre of most
of the Jews and Moslems residing there.

9
JERUSALEM TODAY
  • To date, Jerusalem has been besieged roughly 40
times, at least partially destroyed on 32
    occasions.
  • Modern Jerusalem does not serve as a major center
for business but still serves as a center for
culture, art, and above all else, religion.
