Advisory
  • You will not use all of the strategies being
discussed today every time you do a search.
  • But knowing that these options are available and
using them on occasions when your usual search
strategies do not work is an indication of an
    informed and a good researcher.

3
Points for Today
  • Simple vs. Advanced Searching
  • Subject (Thesaurus) vs. Keyword Searching
  • Boolean Logic
  • Truncation
  • Scholarly/ Peer-Reviewed/ Referred Articles
  • HTML full-text/ PDF/ or ILL
  • Call Numbers

4
Simple vs. Advanced Searching
  • Allows you to search for broad information, or
    very specific information
  • You use the simple search to find an author or
    title
  • One search term/phrase at a time
  • Allows you to build a more detailed/accurate
    search
  • Several search terms/phrases at a time
  • More options for limiting your search

5
Subject vs. Keyword Searching
  • Official words in a database or catalog, aka,
    controlled language
  • Try the subject terms found in one catalog in
your other database searches too. Sometimes you
    can find more/different articles.
  • Words you think of to use for searches, aka,
    natural language
  • Some databases provide a thesaurus to look up
similar words or the official term they are not
    always called a thesaurus.

6
Boolean Logic
  • AND searching for two or more terms in the
same record, U.S. Air Force AND McCain
  • OR searching for one or the other term in a
record, U.S. Air Force OR McCain
  • NOT searching for one term, but not the
other, U.S. Air Force NOT McCain

7
Truncation
  • A way to search for all the possible endings of a
    word at once!!
  • Find the root of your word, then
  • Shift 8
  • Ex. word would find word, words, wordly,
    worded, wording, wordily, wordless, etc.

8
Article Access
  • HTML/ full-text someone has typed the article
    back into the computer
  • PDF a scanned copy of the article
  • Article-linker/360 search will take you either
to the article in another Proctor Library
database, or tells you we do not have it available

9
Books for the Vietnam War
  • Most history books can be found in the C, D, E,
and F sections of the library
  • For this class on the Vietnam War you will use
mostly the D and E sections of the library
  • Other books related to history can and will be
found in other sections of the library. For
example, a book on the history of music would be
in the Ms (the music section)
