3
Lessons Learned CST 2004
  • Had numerous skipped rounds/shrapnel w/CHG 3
    revert to CHG 2
  • Too much 81mm ammo, could use more 60mm
  • 60mm direct lay/hand held was good exposure
  • 3 X FDCs streamlined the CFF training
  • Maintain eight trucks for initial Company
    movement to RNG 2
  • Four trucks for movement between Range 2 and OP6
    worked well
  • Need separate channel w/repeater for motorola
    comms b/t RNG 2-OP6
  • Cadet training on lensatic compass, and radio
procedures prior to site arrival facilitates
    training
  • Manning of each OP with an NCO (primary
instructor) and an enlisted AI facilitated
    training

Scheme of ManeuverOP6
  • Personnel Cadets are broken down by squad (_at_
10-13 per squad). Cadet Squad Leaders accompany
    their squad through training rotation
  • Training 4 stations total 1) CFF Training, 2)
CFF (CCT) - 5 firing OPs, 3) Fire Planning
    TTPs, 4) Mortars (Overview, Lay,
    Emplace/Displace, dry and live fire)
  • Training Rotation Rotate by squad through the
four stations - _at_35 minutes per station.
  • Training Assessment Cadets are evaluated by FSOs
and FSNCOs. A standard evaluation will be used
by all FSOs/FSNCOs to evaluate cadets on the CCT
    of Adjust Indirect Fire

12
OP6 Timeline
  • Demonstration / Safety Brief 10 min
  • Break PLT into 4 SQDs 1 SQD to each station

  • Rotate 3 min
  • Fire Support Procedures (TTPs) 35 min
  • Rotate 3 min
  • Mortar Operations 35 min
  • Total Time 2 hrs 45 min
  • Each SQD rotates through all four stations

13
Scheme of ManeuverGunline/FDC
  • Personnel Cadet platoon will be divided equally
(2 squads going to the weapons, 2 squads going to
    the FDCs).
  • Training Cadets rotate between two stations
Station 1 FDC Training ( 3 FDCs operating
simultaneously) training approx. 8 cadets each on
FDC crew drill. Station 2 Weapons Training (3
    weapons operating simultaneously) training
approx. 8 cadets each on howitzer crew drill/live
    fire.
  • Training Rotation Each of the two groups will
stay on station for 1 hr 10 minutes then rotate.
The senior battery FDO will ensure that the
    rotation is executed.
  • Training Assessment This training will not be
evaluated and is intended to inspire in the
cadets the need for precise gunnery procedures in
delivering close fires in support of the close
combat fight! It will also familiarize the
cadets with the weapons and FDC duties and
functions. A safety qualified section chief will
supervise all cadets on the weapons. All rounds
will be verified by the chief of section for
quadrant, deflection, charge and fuze setting
prior to the round being fired.

14
Gunline/FDC Timeline

15
Scheme of ManeuverRSOP
  • Personnel Cadets will be broken down into six
sections. Cadets will perform the duties of CFB,
    GSG and XO.
  • Training Cadets will perform the duties of a
section occupying a position. Tasks include
emplacement of the base plate, collimator and
aiming posts, laying the weapon for direction and
recording data on the gunners reference card.
  • Training Rotation Cadets will remain in the
same section to enhance teambuilding and
proficiency. All sections will execute two
occupations with an AAR following the first
    occupation.
  • Training Assessment All sections will be graded
on a standard scale during their second
occupation. The competition will determine the
best section and will provide the platoons score
    for the best company competition.

Mission
Cadet Summer Training Fire Support Committee
conducts fire support training for United States
Military Academy cadets 2 June to 7 August 2005
at West Point, NY to qualify Third Class cadets
on THE Common Core Task of Adjust Indirect Fire,
provide leadership opportunities for First and
Second Class cadets, and to inspire all cadets
with the Fire Support Systems contribution to
the combined arms fight.
24
Intent
  • PURPOSE Inspire cadets about the Fire Support
    system and demonstrate Fire Supports
contribution to the close combat fight through
the use of hands on, dynamic, and realistic
    training.
  • KEY TASKS Observed Fire, Fire Planning ISO
Operation Highland Warrior, Fire Direction Center
    Operations, Reconnaissance, Selection, Occupation
    of a Position area , Gun-Line / Mortar
    Operations.
  • ENDSTATE All cadets inspired about Fire
Supports role in the close combat fight. Third
Class cadets qualified on PCT. Cadets have a
general understanding of the entire Fire Support
    system.

Scheme of ManeuverRSOP Timeline
  • XO brief
  • Observe demo 5 min
  • Designate duties / familiarize (Section Chief) 5
    min
  • Conduct joint occupation (Students) 10 min
  • Total Time 20 min
  • Need you to determine best way to execute
this. 20 minutes is not a lot of time. Goal
would be to get hands on training as much as
possible. Can split 45 pax over 6 guns.

30
Scheme of ManeuverGunline
  • Weapon Brief (Section Chief)
  • Weapon Training (Live fire crew drill) 20 min
  • Could probably have each section run through
their section in- briefs, then have students
rotate through performing duties with close
supervision during live fire missions. Again
20 minutes is not a lot of time. Would have
    about 15 pax per gun.
