COMMUNISM IN MALAYA(Early developments)
  • Arrived in 1925 when Chinese Comm Party set up
    the Nanyang Comm Party (NCP) in Singapore.
  • Aim- spread Communism - in the beginning - they
    failed.
  • 1928- Soviet sent agents to SEA to carry out a
    review of the Partys organization and NCP was
    dissolved and replaced by MCP(1930).

-MCP task- to establish the Comm Republic
of Malaya.
  • illegal organization and had to work
    underground. Organizing strikes.
  • As W.W 11 approached - S.Union asked MCP to
    cooperate with British French because they
    against Germany. Germany was against the
    communist.
  • H/ever they spent 10 years against the British -
    Moscow sent Lai Teck to resolve these problem.

  • Lai Teck persuaded the MCP to give support to
    British but at the same time to remove them from
    Malaya.
  • MCP cooperated with British in the beginning and
    their people also received training at 101
    Special training school in Singapore.
  • They were in charge against the Japanese
    occupation in the jungle.
  • Formed MPAJA to continue the opposition against
    Japanese

MCP AFTER W.W 11
  • MPAJA ruled Malaya in the vacuum of Malaya.
  • When BMA was set up they disarmed the MPAJA and
    each guerilla was paid 350 as a reward
  • They were able to hide supplies in the jungle.
  • Mac 1947 Lai Teck disappeared from Malaya and
    replaced by Chin Peng.

THE EMERGENCY
  • The decision to rebel by MCP occurred when their
    opposition against FOM was ignored by British.
  • In 1948 they formed MPABA and this guerilla
    carried out attacks demonstration to expel
    British.
  • - British declared a state of emergency
    throughout Malaya ( later Singapore)

BRITISH REACTION
  • 1- Banning the MCP
  • 2- Abolished Min Yuen
  • 3- Set up the system of national registration.
  • 4- The Briggs Plan 1950-60 -New village
    operation starvation.
  • 5- Dropping leaflets explaining the term of
    surrender.
  • 6- White areas and black areas.
  • 7- Psychological warfare.

END OF EMERGENCY
  • When alliance party won during the election TAR
    offered amnesty for those communist who
    surrendered.
  • Chin Peng had a peace talk with TAR h/ever
    attempt to establish failed as he refused to
    dissolve MCP.
  • Comm lost their support and more white areas was
    declared and emergency ended in 31th July 1960.
