Note Cleanliness is an important factor. Before
assembly, all parts should be cleaned in cleaning
fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths
or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may
be deposited on the parts.

    time. The O-ring seal is shown in order to
    clarify the installation in Step 11.
  • Raise the temperature of bearing (135) and the
    race. Install bearing (135) and the race onto
    input shaft (134) , as shown.
  • Apply clean transmission oil to ring seals (136)
    . Install two ring seals (136) on input shaft
  • (134) .

    are flush with the counterbore in the carrier.

  • Use Tooling (B) to install bearing (125) .

  • Note Coupling (120) may be installed on carrier

    housing. Make sure that the lips of the seals are

    transmission oil to O-ring seal (137) and the

    Illustration 1 for the location of the O-ring
    seal.
  • Install carrier assembly (119) .

  • Install one clutch plate (117) in the housing so
    that the small hole in the clutch plate is
    aligned with the small hole in the housing, as
    shown.
  • Install Tooling (D) in two of the five threaded
    holes in the housing through clutch plate
  • (117) , as shown. Do not remove Tooling (D) until
    Step 85 is completed.
  • Install friction discs (114) and clutch plates
    (117) in alternating order. Start with a friction
    disc. Install clutch plates (117) so that Tooling
    (D) passes through the bolt holes in the clutch
    plates. Install the clutch plates with the small
    holes on the opposite side of Tooling
  • (D) in comparison to the first clutch plate (117)
    that was installed in Step 14.
  • Install O-ring seals (115) and (116) .

. Note For the 966F, install the bearing to a
depth of 12.0 0.5 mm (0.47 0.02 inch) on the
gear end of the output shaft. After assembly, the
inside diameter of bearing (87) must be 34.988
0.039 mm (1.3775 0.0015 inch). Repeat for the
opposite end of the output shaft. Note For the
972F, install the bearing to a depth of 13.00
0.25 mm (0.512 0.010 inch) on the gear end of
the output shaft. After assembly, the inside
diameter of bearing (87) must be 56.650 0.061
mm (2.2303 0.0024 inch). Install the bearing on
the other end of the output shaft to a depth of
25.50 0.25 mm (1.004 0.010 inch). After
assembly, the inside diameter of bearing must be
35.629 0.039 mm (1.4028 0.0016 inch).

Personal injury can result from being struck by
parts propelled by a released spring force. Make
sure to wear all necessary protective
equipment. Follow the recommended procedure and
use all recommended tooling to release the spring
force.
  1. Stack clutch piston (42) , coned disc springs
    (41) , and retainer plate (40) on the clutch
    housing. Make sure that the outside edges of the
    coned disc springs contact each other first.
  2. Use steel spacers and a press to push on retainer
    plate (40) . Install retaining ring (39) on the
    clutch housing.

Typical Example 88. Apply 690 to 1030 kPa (100
to 150 psi) of shop air pressure into each oil
passage (140) (total of six). If the clutch
pistons do not move, apply a small amount of
clean transmission oil in each oil passage and
check for movement again. If the clutch pistons
do not move, the transmission must be
disassembled again so that the clutch pistons and
the seal rings can be checked. Note The mounting
surfaces for the transmission modulating valves
must be completely clean. Clean the surfaces
before installation of the transmission
modulating valves.

    mounting bolts is 30 4 Nm (265 35 lb in).
  • Connect the harness assemblies which attach to

  • End By Connect the transmission to the output
    transfer gears. Refer to Disassembly and

    - Connect".
