Title: This exhibition has been put together by Women Living Under Muslim Laws

1
This exhibition has been put together by Women
Living Under Muslim Laws
  • Women Living Under Muslim Laws is an
    international Network that provides information,
solidarity and support for all women whose lives
are shaped, conditioned or governed by laws and
customs said to derive from Islam. The Network
aims to increase the autonomy of women by
supporting the local struggles of women from
within Muslim countries and communities and
linking them with feminist and progressive groups
at large facilitating interaction, exchanges and
contacts and providing information as well as a
    channel of communication.

  • This exhibition
  • An exhibition looking at womens dress in Muslim
countries and communities has long been a dream
of the WLUML network. These first 20 panels
should be seen as work in progress. Here we
have looked at six countries in detail
reflecting active networking linkages, as well as
a wealth of dress traditions and the politics of
    dress.
  • Exhibition sources
  • A wide variety of sources have been examined and
images copied for this exhibition. Our thanks go
to all those writers, journalists, artists and
photographers who have recorded and commented on
womens dress. We have acknowledged wherever
possible, but we apologise to any individuals we
have not named. We thank the British Library and
the library at the School of Oriental and African
Studies, London University. The exhibition is
for the WLUML network and not for general public
    display.
