1
Photography
  • The history of photojournalism

2
The History of Photography
  • Officially invented in 1839 (or when it was first
    made public)
  • First reference to photography recorded by
    Aristotle in 4th Century
  • Originally a room that refracted light onto the
    wall
  • KEY TERMcamera obscura-Latin for dark
    room/chamber

3
The First Pictures
  • Sir John Herschel discovered sodium hyposulphite,
    (a fixing agent) in 1819
  • 1826, Joseph Niepce (a Frenchman) made the first
    photograph
  • 1841 William Fox Talbot developed the first
negative to positive process, a process that was
    repeatablemeaning prints were possible.

4
The Photography Explosion
  • By 1853 there were 80 professional photographers
    in NY
  • People were obsessed with photographs
  • In the early 1880s the shutter was invented
making it possible to take a photo in 1/25 of a
    second instead of 15-20 seconds.

5
Shutter
  • The mechanism used to
  • control when and for how
  • long the film inside the
  • camera is exposed to light.
  • It is activated by pressing
  • the button that takes the picture. The
  • button is correctly called the shutter button
  • or the shutter-release button.

6
Kodak
  • In 1885, George Eastman created the first film on
    a roll.
  • In 1888, he created the trademark, Kodak.
  • Their cameras were strictly point and shootthey
coined the term, You take the photo, well do
    the rest

George Eastman
7
Kodak
  • The trademark, Kodak, is a word Eastman made
uphe just liked the sound of it. He also
thought the visual appearance of it would look
and be remembered. It doesnt mean anything!

8
Early Kodak Cameras
  • Over the next 30 years, there werent many
    developments
  • Most amateurs used cameras like the box camera.
  • Early Kodak cameras looked like the one to the
    left.

9
Point and Shoot
  • The name often given to compact cameras, simply
because it more or less defines the actions
needed to take a photograph with those machines.
    Most professional photographers call them
    compact cameras

10
Photojournalism
  • With the creation of the 35 mm camera, a new
    breed of photographers were createdthe
    photojournalists
  • A photojournalist recorded not only the major
news stories of the day, but also documented more
everyday subjects like sport events. People all
over the world were even able to see pictures
    from around the world.

11
SLR Cameras
  • The most versatile and popular camera type
    available was launched in 1960.
  • SLR stands for single lens reflex and is a camera
design in which the scene in the viewfinder is
exactly the same as that seen by the lens.

12
The Modern Compact
  • Prior to 1980, cameras all had fixed-focal-length
    lenses.
  • Fixed-focal-length lens is a non-zoom lens
  • In 1980, Minolta released the first compact
    camera with a zoom lens.
  • Since then, film cameras have exploded onto the
scene and are available in a variety of zooms.

13
The Digital Age
  • Now instead of recording images on light
sensitive emulsions, we record electronic images.
  • Even though the wave of the future is digital
cameras, digital and film cameras will most
likely coexist for the next 30 years or so.
