9
Effective Supervision
  • Supervision Relationships THE KEY to a
    successful supervision experience.
  • Requires mutual agreement on goals and tasks
  • Requires specific measures for evaluation
  • Requires a degree of emotional bonding
  • Students want to have a purpose for tasks and to
    receive helpful feedback/evaluation frequently.
You need to prepare goals, discuss them and
    request ongoing evaluation.

10
Effective Supervision
  • Student Counselor Development
  • Student counselors go through stages of
    development as school counselors
  • In new situations, students want to progress from
direction to collaboration to consultation to
    independence with their supervisors
  • Students need some direction. They learn from
observation, experience, and processing time. You
    may have to request this.

11
Effective Supervision
  • Supervisor Roles
  • Teacher-directive, instructs appropriate when
    you begin something new
  • Mentor-role model, coach always appropriate
  • Consultant-facilitative, mutual problem-solving
appropriate when you have some experience
  • Counselor-helps you discover how your personal
style impacts your work appropriate as needed
  • Evaluator-judges how well your work compares to
minimum competency in school counselor standards
    and your goals
  • Supervisors tend to function in a limited number
of these roles. You may have to assess when you
need them to assume another role. You may have
    to request that.

12
Effective Supervision
  • Focus of Supervision
  • Conceptual (how you think about what you do WHY
    you do WHAT you do)
  • Skill-based (HOW you go about doing what you do)
  • Personalization (how your personal style impacts
    what you are doing)
  • Students can benefit from each of these foci, but
you may have to ask for ones in addition to what
    your supervisor usually uses.

13
Effective Supervision
  • Ethics, Law, Regulations, Policies, Procedures
  • You are responsible for knowing and following the
ASCA Ethical Guidelines for School Counselors.
  • Students should review before/during practicum
and discuss with supervisors as need arises
  • You should be aware that all schools have to
follow state and federal law and they have their
    own regulations, policies and procedures.
Critical areas are those of confidentiality,
reporting, student records, and crisis plans
  • Request copies of these even before you begin
your practicum. Assume they exist and dont
    proceed without checking.

14
Effective Supervision
  • Diversity
  • Supervision should provide you with opportunities
    to increase your awareness/sensitivity, your
knowledge, and your skills dealing with human
    diversity. Ask about those opportunities.
  • Schools should be engaging in self-reform focused
on the goal of academic success and equal access
to programs and services for all students,
    especially those historically underserved. Use
all school personnel to help you grow in your
ability to do this as a school counselor.

15
Effective Supervision
  • To sum up
  • You need to prepare for supervision.
  • To enhance your likelihood of a great practicum
  • Prepare specific goals for your practicum
  • Collaborate with your supervisor to provide you
with a varied approach to feedback, with
opportunity to integrate theory and practice,
    experience with school reform
  • Plan to be proactive in getting the most out of
    your practicum.
