Fin types (from Estes)
8
  • Fins 3,4,5.
  • Tack on with a little glue (let glue set on fin
root for 1 minute before mounting.
  • Reinforce (for smaller rockets add launch lug to
fin to cut down on drag).
  • See Handbook of Model Rocketry

9
Body Tube
  • Lightly sand once where fin will be applied.
  • How does the length of a tube effect flight?

10
Parachute or Streamer
  • Parachute for heavier rockets

11
Hints for Building
  • Newspaper or paper bag to cover table or bench.
Wax paper on top makes an excellent work table.
Glue or Paint tends not to stick to it.
  • Hobby knife Always cut away from you and any
other person! (I do all the cutting in my class).
    Remember the table underneath!)
  • Try making a few rockets before teaching it.
  • Check out ASTRE local rocket club.. They would
love to come to help you. http//astre.home.mindsp
    ring.com/
  • Extra Rocket Parts such as Estes Designer Special

12
Hints for Building cont.
  • Also have Hobby Knife, Elmers Wood Glue (Elmers
    Professional Dries quicker), wood splints
(although parts from balsa fins make excellent
    glue sticks.

Middle School Activities cont.
  • Invention Challenge Scale Down TEAM America
Example 300 feet in 45 seconds returning 1 egg.
Use Egg loft nose cone (not allowed in Team
    America).
  • Run lab on how fins effect flight (Estes Viking
    good Choice).
  • Find the height of tall tree in area
(triangulate) then rockets. Minimum 3 trackers
per measurement. Two works ok. Average readings
    (see Handbook Model Rocketry).
  • Use one type of rocket but mount fins at
different root edge how does this effect height
traveled. Remember to launch several runs for
    all.
  • Review variables in flight identify
    Manipulative, Responding, Fixed, and control.
