If there were one phrase to describe my
philosophy of education it would be the same one
used to describe the lifelong love of learning,
liberal education. It rests on the supposition
that our humanity is enriched by the pursuit of
learning for its own sake it is dedicated to the
proposition that growth in thought, and the power
to think, increases the pleasure, breadth, and
value of life.

Unlike traditional history courses this course
takes a hemispheric approach that also
encompasses the other Americas Cuba, Mexico,
Haiti, and Brazil. The chronological boundaries
of this course will span from 1492-1990.
Students will be expected to become aware of the
Americas Concept and then the key political,
social, economic and cultural events and themes
that have had an impact on the Americas.

We will pay close attention to the hegemonic
cultures that achieve a degree of dominance at
particular times and places. We are especially
interested in issues of cultural resistance,

of dominance and hierarchy, but also in the
various ways that order has been contested and
resisted.
