- Main Drive Shaft - Remove and Install
- SMCS - 3175-010 3253-010-MV
- Removal Procedure
- Apply the parking brake.
- Tilt the cab.
- Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF
position.

- Attach a suitable lifting device to center drive
shaft (1). The weight of center drive shaft (1)
is approximately 60 kg (132 lb). The suitable
lifting device should be positioned between cab
(3) and radiator (4). - Remove bolts (2) and lower center drive shaft (1)
to the ground. - Installation Procedure
- Install drive shaft (1) in the reverse order of
removal. - a. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 270 40 Nm
(200 30 lb ft).

Start By a. Install the steering frame lock.
Personal injury can result from driveline torque
windup under load. Unequal wheel speed can
result in driveline torque windup which can
cause driveline components to be under load
during disassembly. Relieve the driveline torque
windup before disassembly.
1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF
position.

order to raise the front axle until one of the
wheels clears the ground. This will release the
driveline torque windup in the front axle. Remove
Tooling (A).

order to disconnect drive shaft (2) from the
front axle.

order to disconnect drive shaft (2) from output
transfer gear (4).
75. Use two people in order to remove drive shaft
(2) from the machine. The weight of drive shaft
(2) is approximately 30 kg (60 lb).

the orientation of the lip seal for installation
purposes. - Installation Procedure
- Install drive shaft (2) in the reverse order of
the removal. - Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 135 20 Nm
(100 15 lb ft). - Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 135 20 Nm
(100 15 lb ft).

Start By a. Install the steering frame lock.
Personal injury or death can result from machine
articulation or movement. Machine frames can
move and a person can be crushed. Connect the
steering frame lock link between the front and
rear frames before working on machine. Do not
disconnect the lock link until the machine is
made operational and the commissioning procedure
is completed.
9Personal injury can result from driveline torque
windup under load. Unequal wheel speed can
result in driveline torque windup which can
cause driveline components to be under load
during disassembly. Relieve the driveline torque
windup before disassembly.
1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF
position.

order to raise the front axle until one of the
wheels clears the ground. This will release
driveline torque windup in the drive train. Lower
the wheels back to the ground and remove Tooling
(A).

on output transfer gear (2).

- Remove bolts (5) in order to disconnect drive
shaft (1) from the yoke on through hitch drive
shaft (4). - Use two people in order to remove drive shaft (1)
from the machine. The weight of the drive shaft
is approximately 40 kg (81 lb). - Installation Procedure
- Install drive shaft (1) in the reverse order of
the removal. - Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 135 20 Nm
(100 15 lb ft). - Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 135 20 Nm
(100 15 lb ft).

- Start By
- Install the steering frame lock. Refer to
Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering
Frame Lock". - Remove the center drive shaft. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Center Drive Shaft -
Remove and Install". - Remove the hitch drive shaft. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Hitch Drive Shaft -
Remove and Install".
12Personal injury or death can result from machine
articulation or movement. Machine frames can
move and a person can be crushed. Connect the
steering frame lock link between the front and
rear frames before working on machine. Do not
disconnect the lock link until the machine is
made operational and the commissioning procedure
is completed.
Before service work is begun, park the machine on
a hard level surface. Block the wheels of the
machine so unexpected movement will not occur.
Unexpected movement of the machine can cause
personal injury or death.
1. Chock the front wheels of the machine to
prevent movement.

Secure the truck bed in the raised position with
Tooling (A). Remove the clamp from the cylinder
and move the boot upward. Use two people to
position the three Tooling (A). Position all
three Tooling (A) on one cylinder.

the washers to remove locking plate (1) from
thrust flange (3) and bearing carrier (4).

(1) and position the dowel on the locking plate
into a hole in thrust flange (3). Insert a
suitable 3/4 inch breaker bar into the locking
plate. Use this Tooling to turn the thrust
flange counterclockwise and remove the thrust
flange from bearing carrier (4).

145. Remove bolt (5) and washer (6) to remove shaft
yoke (7). Remove the O-ring seal from bearing
carrier (8) and the hitch drive shaft.

- Remove bolts (9) and the washers to disconnect
bearing carrier (4) from the hitch tube. Install
Tooling (B) into the threaded holes in the
bearing carrier to force the bearing carrier
from the hitch tube. Remove Tooling (B) from the
threaded holes. - Remove lip seal (10) from the bearing housing.

to the bearing carrier. Use a suitable lifting
device to remove the bearing carrier and the
hitch drive shaft from the machine. The weight of
the bearing carrier and the hitch drive shaft is
approximately 56 kg (123 lb).

washer (12) to remove shaft yoke (13). Remove the
O-ring seal from bearing carrier (4) and hitch
drive shaft (14).

- Use Tooling (D) to remove retaining ring (15)
from bearing carrier (4). - Remove hitch drive shaft (14) and roller bearing
(17) from the bearing carrier as a unit. Remove
O-ring seal (16) from the bearing carrier.

1612. Use a suitable punch to remove lip seal (18)
from bearing carrier (4).

press and Tooling (E) to remove bearing (17) from
hitch drive shaft (14). Invert the hitch drive
shaft and remove the bearing (not shown) from the
other side of hitch drive shaft (14).

and the washers to disconnect bearing carrier (8)
from the hitch tube. Install Tooling (F) into
the threaded holes in the bearing carrier to
force the bearing carrier from the hitch tube.
Remove the bearing carrier from the machine.
Remove Tooling (F).

1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any
parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar
parts for replacement.

carrier with Tooling (H) to lubricate the lip
seal.

bolts - (9) to a torque of 240 20 Nm (177 15 lb ft).
- Note Ensure that the three remaining bolt holes
in the bearing carrier, align next to each other
for installation of the locking plate. - Note the orientation of lip seal (10), and
install the lip seal onto bearing housing (4).
