Title: Sareen

1
Sareen
Sareen is a post-16 student taking a Higher
Diploma in hair and beauty studies. He thinks he
might like to become a beauty therapist, or
possibly a make-up artist, or perhaps work in the
cosmetics industry in some way but he is not sure
what opportunities there are or what type of work
would best suit him. This Diploma is therefore
ideal for him because it allows him to find out
more about the industry while keeping his future
options open.

Project
Sareens project was an investigation of how
products and services can be promoted and sold in
the salon. He persuaded the mens hairdressing
salon where he worked part-time to allow him to
experiment with different ways of displaying
mens toiletries and promoting through them
through personal recommendations to the clients.
He also had the chance to speak to the visiting
manufacturers representative, and was very
interested in the duties he performed within
their job. Over a period of two months, he kept
detailed records of different displays used and
the different sales strategies employed and
correlated these with the sales figures. He
presented his findings in the form of a
word-processed report with photographs and
spreadsheet tables.
Sareen was able to spend two weeks working in the
offices of a large manufacturer of male
cosmetics. Which was launching a new product
line. Because it was a small organisation, he
was able to become involved in a wide variety of
administrative and clerical tasks, which gave him
the opportunity to be present at meetings and
discussions about the prospects for the new line.
He was therefore able to find out what issues are
involved in promoting cosmetics, particularly
those concerned with advertising images and
marketing strategies. Sareen also had a Saturday
job working in a mens hairdressing salon.
Progression route Sareens Higher Diploma has
helped him focus his career intentions and he
decides to take an Apprenticeship in Barbering ,
due to his interest in male grooming and he might
like to pursue a career with a hair or beauty
manufacturing company.
