The Trade Reform Impact
  • Trade Reform in W.A.
  • Providing a more responsive approach to the
    Apprentice system to encourage engagement and
    Implemented by a Hairdressing Skills Formation
    taskforce
  • Decrease the apprentices training program from 4
    years to 3 years (only 2 yrs in a training
    Institution)
  • Impact of this project was not to disadvantage
    apprentices on the 4 year program and enable a
    quicker transition into industry for both 3 and 4
    year trained apprentices

What was discovered
  • High percentage of industry had no idea about
    the trade reform impact
  • Most thought it was driven by TAFE institutes
  • TAFE trained students for their own needs not
    for industry.
  • Dissemination of information was difficult.

Achieving COAGs aims
  • Develop an industry training network in line with
    COAGs focus on a more flexible and responsive
    training system that improves industrys
    productivity and enhances participation in the
    workforce.
  • Challenger TAFE will work with industry partners
    in developing relevant programs that ensure work
    ready, appropriately skilled workers. Programs
    will be client focused using flexible formats to
    meet the specific requirements of differing
    customer groups.
