INSTALLING
  • If obtained on floppy disk or CD, insert the disk
    and execute SETUP.EXE
  • Click start/run and type ASETUP
  • Or, user Explorer to find ASETUP and
    double-click
  • (or use the letter of the CD drive, as
    appropriate)

  • If obtained by email or from a web site
  • Save the file to a temporary directory
  • Unpack the archive
  • If it is a ZIP file, UNZIP it
  • If it is a self-extracting archive, execute it to
    unzip
  • Execute SETUP to install

  • The default directory for the program
    (recommended) will be C\PURATION
  • Agree to installations request for making a
    program group and a program manager group

Placing on Desktop
  • If not on desktop, PURATION folder can be placed
    there
  • Click START/PROGRAMS, locate the PURATION folder
    and RIGHT click it
  • Choose CREATE SHORTCUT
  • Drag the shortcut to the desktop by
    left-click/drag/release

  • Click the PUBEEF icon
  • PUBEEF may start in a window that does not fill
    the screen.
  • Maximize the screen OR
  • Press ALT-ENTER to make it full screen

Balancing a Ration - STEPS
  • Get REQUIREMENTS by choosing animal and
    specifying its data
  • Choose feeds and adjust nutrient contents
  • BALANCE, by hand or automatically, to determine
    feed amounts that meet needs

  • Proceed through the program IN ORDER, OR use the
    Main Menu as the hub and go to each section as
    desired.
  • The first time through, youll probably want to
    proceed in order (just hit next)

Typical Operation
  • Start by choosing RATION
  • Select Breeding_herd (cows) or Finishing (steers
    heifers)

Data Screens
  • The first data screen shows input possibilities
    on the NEXT screen, and entry for Final Shrunk
    Body Weight at Maturity.
  • Enter 1200, typically, for steers and heifers,
    2000 for bulls, for example.

    growing-finishing)
  • Leave Intake at 0 for computer to calculate it.

  • Enter data pressing ENTER after each choice (do
    not use arrows)
  • Calculation at days to reach target aids figuring
    days to calving, if that is the goal (as usual)
  • Enter data as required (F1 gives
    context-sensitive help)

  • Modify nutrient content of feeds

FEEDS
  • MUST have forage in position 1, energy feed
    (corn) in position 2, protein feed in position 3
    to balance automatically.
  • Positions 4 5 are reserved for Ca P
  • Other feeds can be added in lower positions. MUST
    SPECIFY their AMOUNTS.

  • Use feed terms to view feeds of that category
  • Use DOWN and UP to move in the feed list
  • Choose the feed number, enter it.
  • Entry allows feed number entry
  • ALT-L returns feed menu

  • Read warnings
  • However, data is not yet loaded from the external
    file, so do not be alarmed.

  • Data loads from an external feeds file, shared
    with the NRC programs
  • Several methods exist for loading
  • Alt-G
  • Moving to another screen prompts you

Altering Feed Composition
  • Feed composition can be altered 2 places
  • In PUBEEF, but will not be saved and will be
    written over if change is made to feeds
  • In FEEDS (Edit NRC feeds file)
  • Feeds can be opened at the same time PUBEEF is
    run, in another window

  • Find the feed to edit. Note its number.
  • Right arrow to the column to edit
  • Changing TDN causes NE values to change. If you
    type over a NE value, it becomes fixed.
  • Values most important to change are TDN and CP

Editing NRC Feeds File
  • SAVE the file after making changes
  • IMPORTANT - CAREFUL - F4 Exits and F3 Saves. They
    are close together.
  • Be very careful to choose the right one. You can
    easily save when you intended to exit, or exit
    without saving.

  • After making changes to feed file, update the
    data in PUBEEF.
  • ALT-G (may need to press Entry first)

  • Pressing NEXT from feeds takes you to this
    screen. It can be used to enter amounts but it
    isnt necessary.
  • Enter PRICES here, for data.
  • Proceed to Balance Menu

  • Feeds are shown on the left
  • Requirements, Nutrients present, and difference
    is shown on the right.
  • More requirements data is further down the
    screen Use Display, Down Up to see Use

To Print Output
  • Go to the Main Menu (Esc, or Alt-R)
  • Choose INFORMATION / PRINT
  • Print the report desired
  • REPORT is the results of the ration
  • This output can be directed to a file, and
    printed with a word-processor.

  • To save a worksheet for future use.
  • To to QUIT and chose Change_filename_and_save
  • Give it a new name (8 characters)
  • Press Enter, and Enter again to proceed
  • To retrieve
  • Go To HELP and choose file_retrieve

  • Breed adjustment - for maintenance requirements
  • Feed Intake Adjustments - for Holstein breeding,
    fatness, temperature, implants, mud
  • Environmental adjustments

BUT
  • PUBEEF is a pretty good calculator
  • It isnt such a good nutritionist
  • Take responsibility for the ration formed and the
    feeds used. Not every ration balanced will be
    practical.
