Title: Enthusiastic students....
1Enthusiastic students....
raring to go!
2Students enjoy a nice picnic lunch before going
upstream for the study
On a rare sunny day in November!
3Everybody say "cheese"
4Students mug for the camera before going into the
water.
Notice the hats and warm coats.
Air temperature, about 45F
Water temperature about 40F
5Students are setting the stringlines.
This student is not wasting any time ...
while her partners are setting up the second
string line....
she is already measuring the depths.....
and the recorder is writing down the depths.
Notice the student on the right piling up rocks
to hold the stringline taught.
6This group has done their math and is finishing
the placement of the orange markers
First the streams width is divided into thirds...
and then the middle of each third must be
calculated and marked.
7The recorder writes down the depth readings.
The depth measurements are called out.
Two students discuss how and where to time the
oranges.
8Students now are in the Geyser Brook setting
their stringlines from shore to shore.
This may look easy but it is not!
The lines must be very tight and securing them is
difficult
The rocks and banks are slippery and the water
is.....
...cold!
9(notice the piles of rocks needed to keep the
lines tight.)
Two taught stringlines with markers ready for
timing oranges.
10These students have set up their two stringlines.
They are now timing the oranges speed.
Notice the orange markers on the string.
The markers show the middle of each third of the
streams width.
(The oranges path should be in the middle of each
of the three "thirds" of the stream.)
11This person "drops" the orange
The timer can easily see the "finish line"
This student yells "start"
The "catcher" catches the orange and...
gently
tosses it back to the "starter"
12Although the waters cold....
this crew is definitely having fun!
(It actually snowed on this field trip...be
prepared!)
13Do you know why the starter releases the orange
so far upstream?
14Field science (and scientists) in action.
Can you find the orange?
(It's almost at the start line)
15This student is filling up the Half gallon water
sample.
We will analyze this later in the clasroom.
16"Starter"
"Dropper"
"Catcher"
orange!
"Timer"
17Everything is running smoothly!
18All the data gathering is done!
Time to pack up, get back to the bus and...
warm up!
19Does this really need explaining?
20Time for some dry socks?
And a warm trip back to Maple ave. on the bus!
