A committee of Arkansas teachers and
instructional supervisory personnel, assisted by
college teachers, reviewed the following
resources and advised ADE in the revision process

10ADE Social Studies Framework Revision Process
- The framework committee met for 2 weeks in
July and periodically throughout the months of
September through December of 2006 with State
Board approval occurring in February of 2007.

should know and be able to do in social studies

18Arkansas History Clarification
- To comply with Act 787 of 1997
- Arkansas History must be taught in each grade,
K-6. - A greater emphasis on Arkansas History in grades
4 and 5 - Look for the small AR map embedded in the K-6
framework to denote an Arkansas History SLE
19Arkansas History Clarification
- Grades 7-12
- One semester of Arkansas History must be taught
in grades 7-12. - It is a district decision where to place that
one-semester course. - Two one-semester Arkansas History courses have
been developed for use in either grades 7-8 OR
grades 9-12.
20Civics Clarification
- 1 year Civics/American Government or 1 year
Civics - This is one course. A student may NOT take 1
semester of civics in grade 9 and 1 semester of
American Government in grade 10, 11, or 12 and
count the 2 courses as one to meet the civics
requirement for graduation under Smart Core.
21Civics Clarification
- 1 semester Civics for Core
- This course is only for students who have opted
out of the Smart Core curriculum it does NOT
meet the requirements for Smart Core students.
22The following one-semester elective courses have
been developed by ADE, do not need ADE approval,
and must be taught as written.

- World Geography

23ADE Course Approvals
- A course approval will be necessary if
- A district chooses to expand one of the ADE
approved one-semester courses into a one year or
2 semester course (e.g., World Geography,
Economics, Psychology, Sociology, American
Government, Contemporary U. S. History)
24ADE Course Approvals
- A district chooses to create a new course
- If a district has created a course which required
course approval in the past, a new submission
aligned to the new framework will be required
(e.g., African American History)

This icon indicates Student Learning Expectations
that focus on topics in grades K-8 relating to
Arkansas and may be used to fulfill the
requirements of the Arkansas History unit for
grades K-6 as defined in Act 787 of 1997. This
does not meet the 7-12 Arkansas History
requirement as defined in Act 787 of 1997. Refer
to the Arkansas History for grades 7-8 framework
to fulfill this requirement.

- June 26, ADE and master teachers will present an
interactive Arkansas History workshop. - The morning session for K-6 educators will begin
at 900 a.m. and will end at 1130 a.m. The
afternoon session for 7-12 educators will begin
