3Social Studies
- History students will cover Civil War to present
day. - Government Students will explore citizens
rights, the constitution, and what makes the
government work. - Economics Students will learn various
terminology dealing with Economics to illustrate
historical events. - Geography Students will discuss the geography
that pertains to the historical events of the
Civil War to present day.
- Social Studies Fair
- The Social Studies Fair will be coming up in
October. Their will be grades given to students
based on the Social Science fair booklet handed
out in October and for the research paper. The
project board will be done at home only.
4Reading and L.A.
- Method to determine your grades
- Test Projects 40
- Quizzes 25
- Participation 15
- Class work 20
- Reading will include some stories out of the
Reading Street, class and group novels, poetry,
and articles etc. - Genres include fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
- A.R.-students will need to earn 10 points each
month for AR. This will be included under
participation. August, December, and May will
not be included.
- Language Arts also has the same grading method.
- Students will use a journal for writing along
with Type to Learn. - Students will be completing a research paper
starting in Mid October in regards to the Social
Studies Fair. - Type to Learn is a computer program used by
students to type essays. Students will be using
this program in class to complete writing
assignments.
5Science
- Expectations
- Pretest and Posttest will be given at the
beginning and end of each unit. - Notebook checks will be conducted at the end of
each unit as all students are expected to keep
notes/class work in their binders. The work will
be collected and entered into the grade book as a
class work grade.

6Spelling
- Students will pretest every Wednesday and have a
post test on Tuesdays. - Those that score an 88 or higher on the pretest
will work from a set of Latin and Greek root
words. - The Spelling/Vocabulary test consists of choosing
the correctly spelled word and being able to
identify which word completes a sentence. - Students will have vocabulary activities to work
on in class and spelling activities to work on at
home. Some students may have time to work on
their spelling activities in class.
7Math
- This includes Numbers and Operations,
Measurement, Geometry, Algebra, Data and
Statistics - All students must pass the Math portion of the
CRCT in order to be promoted to the 6th grade.

12Grading System
- A 90 - 100
- B 80 - 89
- C 71 -79
- D 70
- F 69 and below
- I take off 10 points per day for late
assignments, after 4 days the work is not
accepted.
13Honor Roll Merit List
- Honor Rolls
- Students may qualify for either of two honor
rolls - 1. Principal's Honor Roll is 90 or better in all
academic subjects. - 2. Merit Roll is an 80 or better in all academic
subjects.

15Important Information
- Agendas should be completed by the student in
each class, and signed nightly by the parent. - One day per day absent is allowed for make-up
work. - Be prepared for classpaper, pencil, text

16After School Program (ASP)
- For students staying after school it is 6.00 per
day. You may pay by the week or by the day.
Please turn in money during homeroom or before
9am. If after 10am, you must pay 12.00. - Make check payable to Avery ES and earmark it
for ASP. Be sure to write which days you will be
sending your child. You MUST pick your child up
by 6pm SHARP!
17Dress Code
- Pants Shorts must be 5" from the top of the
kneecaps. Use a 3 X 5 index card to measure. - Skirts Dresses must be 3" from the top of the
knee caps. - Shirts Blouses must have no writing, graphics,
or pictures that unreasonably attract the
attention of other students or cause disruption
or interference with the operation of the school.
Shirttails must be below the belt line even with
arms raised above the head or when the student is
seated. No tank tops, halter tops, nor spaghetti
straps allowed. - Undergarments must be appropriate and worn at
all times.
18Buses
- Students will not be permitted to ride a bus
other than their own to another student's home.
Exceptions will be considered if a written
request is made by parents of the both students
and if space is available on the bus involved. A
note must be brought by both students at the
beginning of the school day for approval. - Note the same policy applies to students
wanting to ride home with someone else.
19Medication
- Students who need to take medication while at
school should leave the medication with the
office or clinic with a form as soon as they
arrive at school. Permission letters from
parents/guardians, doctor's dosages, and times
for administering are to accompany all
medication. It should be in the original
container also. No student will be allowed to
take any medication without a note. All
medication, prescription or Over The Counter
(OTC) drugs are to be registered at the clinic

21Academic Bowl
- Tryouts will be held before Thanksgiving break
and practice begins after the break - Only 8-10 students will be accepted from 4th and
5th grades - Practices are 1-2 a week
- There will be 4 practice games before the final
meet on a Saturday (TBA)
22National Jr. Beta Club
- The Beta Club will start after 1st report cards
go out. - We look at the 1st 9 weeks to see who is
qualified for the Jr. Beta Club. - You must have all As or only 1 B in core
subjects. - Dec. thru May monthly meetings _at_ 7 am in the
Family Living Suite - See Mrs. Turners website for more information

23Science Olympiad
- Science Olympiad will begin January 2010
- Students must complete an application with
parents signature and have at least a C average
or higher in Math and Science as well as a
teacher recommendation - We will meet once a week starting in January from
230-430 - Students must attend practices and the
competition in the spring - Space is limited
