Lets start with some questions
3What is the best way to learn?
. . . my way!
Education should help students build their skills
in both their preferred and less preferred modes
of learning. The goal is to make sure that the
learning needs of students in each category are
met at least part of the time. This is referred
to as "teaching around the cycle."
4What is the best way to teach?
. . . your way!
If professors teach exclusively in a manner that
favors their students' less preferred learning
style modes, the students' discomfort level may
be great enough to interfere with their learning.
On the other hand, if professors teach
exclusively in their students' preferred modes,
the students may not develop the mental dexterity
they need to reach their potential for
achievement in school and as professionals.
5People learn in different ways.
The are two major differences in how we learn.
6PERCEIVE,
The first is how we
PROCESS.
the second is how we
PERCEIVE
P R O C E S S
7We perceive reality in different ways.
feel
Some of us our way.
think
Others through things.
8Concrete
- Feeling
Its like we stand at different places on a line
from CONCRETE to ABSTRACT. And the place where
we stand is our most comfortable place.
Abstract
- Thinking
9Both kinds of perception are equally valuable.
Both kinds have their own strengths and
weaknesses.
10How we process information is the 2nd major
difference in how we learn.
try it.
Some of us jump right in and
watch
Others what is happening and reflect
on it.
11Active
- Doing
Reflective
- Watching
Its like we stand at different places on a line
from ACTIVE to REFLECTIVE. And the place where
we stand is our most comfortable place.
12Both ways of processing information and
experience are equally valuable. Both have
strengths and weaknesses.
13Schools/Churches ask studentsto watch, listen
and reflect.
Watcher.
How lovely for the How difficult for the
Doer.
14Schools/Churches do not value sensing and
feeling.
Thinker.
How lovely for the How sad and frustrating for
the
Feeler.
15Question? Can you think of some reasons why
schools/churches dont value the differentways
people learn?
16Real Education means . . .
We need to learn to FEEL THINK. We need to
learn to REFLECT ACT.
