6
Chapter 5 (old Chapter 2)LP-Gas Equipment and
Appliances
  • The remaining Chapters 6 through 15 are titled
and renumbered and are in the same order as they
    are in the 2001 Edition.
  • The divisions of the chapters are similar to the
2001 Edition and include sections with the
chapter number followed by a number for each
section in numerical order with a period
separating the two numbers and a title is
    required.

7
Other Divisions of the Text
  • Sections are subdivided into sub-sections and
have a third number added and generally have a
title. A title is not required, but if one of the
sub-sections has a title all of the sib-sections
in the section must have titles.

8
Other Divisions of the Text
  • The next division is a four digit paragraph
(example- 4.3.2.5) and the next division is a
sub-paragraph that is identified with a
parenthetical upper case letter example- (D)
and this may be followed by a list using
    parenthetical numbers example-(3).

9
Other Divisions of the Text
  • If a division of a list is required, it must be a
parenthetical lower case letter - example - (f)
    - which was used for sub-paragraphs in previous
    editions

10
Lists
  • The items in a numbered list should be single
sentences, single phrases, or single words and
    can follow subsections, paragraphs, or
sub-paragraphs. The lists are usually preceded by
text like as follows or the following that
    ends with a colon.

11
Lists
  • The listed items should be of parallel
construction starting with all verbs or all
nouns. Sub-lists should meet the same criteria
and are identified with a parenthetical lower
    case letter.

12
Other Interesting Rules
  • The term shall be permitted (to be) is used to
state a use that is permitted or is used to
indicate an alternative requirement to a
    specified requirement.
  • All numbered sections, paragraphs, and listings
should have at least two divisions.

13
Other Interesting Rules
  • Possible unenforceable or vague terms should not
be used. Examples of these words are as follows
  • Acceptable, Adequate, Appropriate, May,
    Preferred, Substantially, Suitable, Usually, etc.
  • Definitions should not contain requirements

14
More Interesting Rules
  • Exceptions shall be avoided and previous
exceptions are now reworded as requirements or
    removed.
  • Only one requirement is allowed per paragraph.

15
More Interesting Rules
  • The former Appendix is now called the Annex.
  • Non-mandatory text for explanation and
information purposes should be removed from the
main text and placed in the annexes.

16
More Interesting Rules
  • An asterisk is inserted after a section,
paragraph, or listing number in the text to
indicate that explanatory material can be found
    in Annex A
  • This item is under the same section, paragraph,
or listing number preceded by the letter A. in
    the Annex.

17
Conclusion
  • The Committee reviewed 270 (8-1/2 x 11) pages to
correct the code to the Manual of Style along
with many editorial changes to make the code more
    user friendly.
  • Many titled subsections were added to make
    finding things much easier.

18
Conclusion
  • The Committee reviewed 148 proposals for either
additions or changes to the code to improve
    safety.
  • We feel that the new 2004 Edition of NFPA 58 is
the most comprehensive and easiest to understand
code that we have ever had.
