Sustainability
We have put this briefing together to explain

3Triple bottom line approach
Sustainability whats it all about?
- It is a concept closely linked to sustainable
development which is often described as - ..development which meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs - In other words doing business in a way that
protects the environment maintains social justice
and continues to provide economic effectiveness
the triple bottom line approach.

4Why is sustainable development important?
ALARMING FACTS
- More than 50 countries in the world are poorer
now than they were in 1990. - 16 million agricultural workers will die in
Africa in the next 20 years - Every second human activity emits another 700
tonnes of CO2, enough to fill 140 Olympic size
swimming pools - 60 of the worlds ecosystems have been damaged
- 30 of the worlds mammals, birds and fish are
threatened with extinction - Extinctions 1000 x natural background
- Every 3 seconds a child dies in Africa
5Our way of life is unsustainable!
- The way that we live our lives is not sustainable
and it is causing damage to the environment,
society and the global economy. - Global top priorities
- Climate change
- Poverty
- Nutrition and health
- Debt
- Fair trade
- Deforestation biodiversity
- Water
- If we do not tackle these issues now the world
will be a much more difficult place for our
children to live a decent life.
6 United Nations Global Plan of Action
- During 1992 the world came together at the Rio
Earth summit to decide how we should tackle
global sustainable development issues. This led
to the UN Agenda 21 which details a plan of
action into the 21st century. - It was this document that led to the development
of - Montreal protocol
- Global Compact
- Kyoto protocol
- Millennium Development Goals
United Nations Agenda 21
- Addressing
- Social and economic problems
- Conservation and resources management
- Strengthening the role of women youth
- Implementation strategies

7UN Agenda 21, Chapter 30, paragraph 30.1
Business and industry, including transnational
corporations and their representative
organisations should be full participants in the
implementation and evaluation of activities
related to Agenda 21.
We must all play a part
All businesses both large and small can improve
their response to global sustainability issues.
It is not only the morally responsible thing to
do it is also good for business. In years to
come, the only truly successful businesses will
be those that achieve a sustainable balance
between their own interests, and those of society
and the natural world.
Kinds of questions to ask ourselves
Can we cut our carbon dioxide emission
Is our material from ethical sources
Is child labour endemic in our supply chain
Can we use more recycled products
Are we paying a fair days wage
Can we do more with less
Do our activities exploit those in poverty
Are we complicit in the abuse of human rights
