PILOT PROJECT PROCESS
  • Identify
  • Analyse
  • Transfer in
  • Adapt
  • Deliver
  • Transfer out

3
KEY FACTS
  • Project Partner Surrey County Council
  • Target group Residents of Byfleet (a village in
    North West Surrey)
  • Project theme Water
  • Behaviour change being addressed Domestic water
consumption in Byfleet which, like the rest of
the South East of England, has the highest
domestic water consumption rates in Europe. Water
    shortages are common.

4
THE ORIGINAL PROJECT
  • The Wishing District vision of a clean
    neighbourhood.
  • A Dutch project aimed at 6-12 year old children
as well as municipalities, local organisations
    and parents.
  • Goal To enable children to act over what they
think is an ideal area to live in
  • Focus Waste and energy

5
THE ORIGINAL PROJECT
  • The municipality asks children to help them
create solutions for a better neighbourhood.
  • The children talk and learn in the classroom,
  • They undertake research in the local area
  • They consider their findings and present their
results to parents, and on bus stop posters.
  • The results are fed back to the municipality.

6
TRANSFER IN RATIONALE
  • Surrey County Council wants to encourage schools
to address sustainability issues on their own
    premises
  • The Wishing District provided a proven method of
    doing this
  • The project was achievable in the 6 months
    allocated to pilot

7
TRANSFER IN CONTENT
  • Influencing adults (municipalities) by asking
children to help them achieve more sustainable
    behaviour in the community
  • The concept of securing a formal agreement
    between citizens (pupils) and officials
    (municipality)

8
TRANSFER IN PROCESS
  • Surrey County Council arranged a visit to Holland
    in June 2006
  • They held discussions with teachers, the
children, public officials, politicians and the
LA21 representative. These were written up as
    reference resources
  • Officers received and later adapted a loose-leaf
folder with photographs and text about the
    project
  • A local radio and television crew recorded the
visit and broadcast interviews with the visiting
SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL officers for future use
  • On return to Surrey the officers sought and won
approval for local adaptation and enacting.

9
ADAPTATION
  • Essential project elements identified
  • Domestic water consumption agreed as focus -the
project was adapted by involving the local water
    company as a key partner
  • We added the idea of embedding the work in the
    school curriculum
  • We identified a Primary school with a head
teacher with a passion for sustainability
  • We put together a local team school
    pupils/water company/politicians/local officials
    and community leaders

10
RESULTS
  • 150 family groups attended the Byfleet Water Day
  • In school learning activities
  • Public signing day
  • Publicity

11
TRANSFER OUT
  • We produced a Teachers Guide pack on effective
    cross-curriculum teaching about water consumption
  • We produced a cd, including a promotional video
enabling the technique to be disseminated,
written background to the project and web links
  • We submitted our work for consideration for a
    public award
  • A full report on the project is to be added to
    the ChangeLAB project website

12
WERE A WINNER!
