Title: The SchoolNet project: draft sustainability plan

1
The SchoolNet projectdraft sustainability plan
Funded by the Japanese Funds in Trust ASEAN

2
Main steps
  • Continue existing activities which do not incur
    additional costs e.g.
  • learning circles
  • Teachers in pilot schools support peers
  • Write a new proposal to follow up the activities
    in some manner
  • Try to organise a conference or high level
meeting involving potential donors and ministers
    or other high MoE officials

3
Timeline
  • July August 2006
  • UNESCO to write a draft short proposal (5-6
pages) for comment and additions by National
    Coordinators
  • National Coordinators to submit contributions and
    make recommendations on potential donors
    important contacts
  • Complete evaluation and lessons learned
  • Research on funding sources e.g. European
Commission, foundations Your help needed here
    too!

4
Timeline 2
  • September 2006
  • UNESCO to revise draft proposal based on comments
  • Lessons learned will be published
  • Distribute proposal to potential donors and
    countries for consideration regarding national
    seed funding

5
Proposal
  • Include eight countries of SchoolNet should
    this be widened?
  • Length of project 3 years again?
  • More schools should be involved pilot schools
    plus new schools
  • Training workshops for basic and intermediate
    level of ICT held nationally
  • Advanced and telecollaboration training - held at
    regional level

6
Proposal
  • Student activities should be entered in a
    competition organised in the project
  • Winning students and teachers should be brought
to a face to face week of activities / training
    etc.
  • Bridging the digital divide and mentors are
crucial transform trained teachers to be mentors
    for rural/disadvantaged schools
  • Involve regional officials and directors in the
project to ensure understanding and support

7
Proposal
  • Training should be supplemented by an online
learning approach for teachers can be supported
by another project from UNESCO pupils too?
  • Telecollaboration to continue also offer a
simpler model for beginners to join perhaps also
extend to cooperate with other countries?
  • Curriculum topics continue with maths, science
and english what about adding environment/ESD
    topic too?
  • Action research by trained teachers

8
Key issues
  • High level conference/donor meeting is very
expensive to finance UNESCO does not have
    additional funds to cover this
  • Would a country be willing to be a host and cover
    some basic costs?
  • UNESCO could then search for additional funds

9
Key issues
  • ALTERNATIVE piggy back the SchoolNet proposal
to an existing high level conference
  • Please suggest some conferences in
August/September where Ministers will be present!
  • We could demonstrate the project and proposal at
    such a meeting
