UIs for Mobile Devices
  • Loren Terveen
  • CS 5115, Fall 2008
  • December 1

2
Notes
  • Open House
  • Next Wednesday 6-9 PM
  • ME 314
  • Get there at 6 to setup
  • Ill start making the rounds at about 615
  • 12 minutes per project
  • Next weeks deliverables
  • Wednesday
  • Questions about Open House
  • Course wrapup
  • Evaluations

3
Hall of Fame/Shame
  • Payam Javid and Shokohi
  • Billy Skrei and Kevin Oberg

4
Hall of Fame/Shame
  • Milk Cartons
  • Payam Javid
  • Payam Shokohi
  • December 1, 2008

5
Hall of Shame
  • Old school milk Carton
  • Gulf of Execution
    Sometimes you might
    open it from
    the wrong side
  • Visibility
  • Hard to see the open and
    you might miss the exp.
    date on the other side.
    Constraints
  • Not reusable.

6
Hall of Fame
  • New school milk Carton
  • Gulf of Execution
    Clear cap and only able
    to open one way.
  • Visibility
  • Clear opening and exp.
    date right above the cap
    easy to spot. Constraints
  • Reusable.

7
Hall Of Fame/Shame
  • Watches

Analog
Digital
VS

8
Hall Of Shame
  • Affordances- The adjustable knob on this watch
affords spinning (note the ridges), however it
gives no indication that it needs to be pulled
    out to adjust time
  • Feedback- If you do not pull out the knob and
start spinning it, there is no feedback of any
kind to tell you what is happening
  • Constraints- People with large fingers may find
    it difficult to adjust
  • Mappings- Nothing on the watch tells you which
way to turn the knob to turn time forward vs.
    backward
  • Visibility- There is no label on the number 8,
what is it? Roman numerals not always clear

9
Hall Of Fame
  • Affordances- There are 4 inputs, all are clearly
buttons and afford pushing and holding pushed
  • Feedback- User given both audible feedback
(beep) along with tactile clicking response
  • Visibility- Buttons are labeled, grouped
    according to function, date/weekday clearly
    differentiated from time
  • Gulf of Evaluation/Execution- Very small as a
result of efficient use of labels
  • Standardization- Alarm symbol is universal,
    weekday abbreviations are standard

Designing UIs for mobiles
11
(No Transcript)
12
Examples
  • Google search, mail http//www.google.com/mobile/
  • nwa.com vs. wireless.nwa.com

13
Idea Mobilize, dont miniaturize
  • Re-focus on tasks
  • Re-factor content as needed
  • Respect device constraints
  • Rely on computation
  • (e.g., text analysis/summarization more)?

14
Exercise
  • Consider delivering your project teams interface
    on a cell phone

15
Hey
  • Cell phones were designed for voice
communication, so why are we messing around with
    visual interfaces and keypad input?!?

16
Were not the first ones to think of this
  • Voice response systems
  • Press 1 for an existing reservation, Press 2 for
a travel in the United States, Press 3 for Aware
    Travel
  • Problems?

17
Voice Response Systems
  • Arbitrary mappings
  • Transient mappings (e.g., 1 takes on different
    meanings)?
  • Two few keys ? overloaded functions
  • Location listen, press key, listen, press key,
  • Menu hierarchies

18
So lets go to speech / conversational interfaces
  • Voice Interaction Design, Randy Allen Harris,
    Morgan Kaufmann, 2004.

19
Basic idea
  • You can (must) create effective interface using
    imperfect speech recognition technology

20
When to use voice?
  • Harris, p. 205
  • Device context requires it
  • Task context requires it
  • User properties require it (knowledge or
    abilities)

21
GUIs vs. VUIs
  • Input
  • Output
  • Stability
  • Naturalness
  • Information presentation
  • Information flow rate
