Title: Bhopal
1BHOPAL
The Marchfor Justice
2What happened in Bhopal?
On the night of Dec. 2nd 3rd 1984, a Union
Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, began leaking 27
tons of the deadly gas Methyl Isocyanate. None of
the six safety systems designed to contain such a
leak were operational, allowing the gas to spread
throughout the city of Bhopal.
3What happened in Bhopal?
Half a million people were exposed to the gas and
20,000 have died to date as a result of their
exposure. More than 120,000 people still suffer
from ailments caused by the accident and the
subsequent pollution at the plant site. These
ailments include blindness, extreme
difficulty in breathing, and gynecological
disorders. The site has never been properly
cleaned up and it continues to poison the
residents of Bhopal.
4Why did Bhopal happen?
The callousness and blatant disregard for the law
shown by Union Carbide and its owner, Dow
Chemical, have only been rivaled in sheer bad
taste by their shocking and repeated attempts to
cover up all wrong-doing on their part. The words
corporate accountability attain a whole new tinge
when looked at through the eyes of those that
lost everything in this, the worlds most heinous
corporate crime.
5Why Now .
justice delayed is justice denied
The people of Bhopal have had the justice that is
due to them denied for far too long, and have
taken matters in their own hands now literally.
6THE MARCH
The gas disaster victims and their supporters are
on a march to the national capital, New Delhi,
from Bhopal. Along the way, they will visit
various communities and people affected by
corporate deceit. They will also spread awareness
on the Bhopal issue along the way in their
attempt to ensure that no one has to ever face
what they have gone through for 21 long years.
