2Subject Predicate
- Every sentence must have a subject and a
predicate. - Subject topic of the sentence--what is talked
about - Predicate what is being said about the subject
or what the subject says or does--contains the
verb - Usually (not always) the subject is before the
predicate in a sentence.
Examples We ate. The boy kicked the
ball. A cat climbed the tree. In the
tree sat the bird.
Subject-We Predicate-ate Subject- The boy

4Direct Object
- A direct object is a noun or pronoun in the
predicate that receives the action done by the
subject. - The direct object will answer the question Who?
or What?
Examples The teacher gave the answers. The
machine saved hours of work.
What did the teacher give? answers-direct
object The machine saved what? hours-direct
object

6Indirect Object
- An indirect object is a noun or pronoun in the
predicate that receives the action done by the
subject. - The indirect object precedes the direct object
and tells to whom or for whom the action is done
Examples The teacher gave him the answers. The
machine saved us hours of work.
To whom did the teacher give the
answers? him-indirect object The machine saved
hours of work for whom? us-indirect object

8Predicate Nominative
- A predicate nominative is a noun or pronoun in
the predicate that refers to the same thing as
the subject. - A predicate nominative always follows a linking
verb and it is usually only a form of be.
Examples My brother is a pianist. Arnold seemed
to be a good boy.
Pianist refers to brother. pianist-predicate
nominative Boy refers to Arnold. boy-predicate

10Predicate Adjective
- A predicate adjective is an adjective in the
predicate that is descriptive of the subject. - A predicate adjective follows a linking verb.
Examples The game was unusually fast. You look
tired.
