This is a Client / Server Application
4
What is a client / server application?
  • A computer architecture involving a client
computer requesting services and a server
computer that processes and provides the services
    or response to the client.
  • Client and server are usually separate devices
(computers) each designed to perform a specific
function often in totally different places.

5
Set up options
  • A server could be placed within a library serving
    all computers in the library.
  • A server could be placed in a system office
serving all computers and schools within a
    system.
  • A server could be placed in a different state and
a client could send requests online.
  • A separate server could be used for one thing
    such as e-mail.

6
Two / Three Tier Architecture
  • There may be a two tier architecture where
teachers and students use the client computers
and there is a different computer that is set up
    to be the server.
  • There may be a three tier architecture where
teachers and students use the client computers,
the school has a server that requests travel thru
to get to an additional server elsewhere with
    additional resources.

7
Example of Server
  • I log in at school each morning.
  • As my computer comes up it connects me with two
    servers
  • 1 SIMS Novell Server
  • 2 NT Server for e-mail, attendance and
    discipline programs, internet, etc.

8
Using client / server applications
  • I do SIMS on the SIMS Novell Server
  • I check e-mail on the NT Server
  • I go online to ASU on the NT
  • ASUs website is on their server
  • I go to school website on the NT
  • I go to my bank website on the NT
  • And get on the banks server

  • Research listings
  • Information Sources
  • Check In / Check Out

10
Client / Server Applications in the Media Center
  • Issues
  • Security
  • Who has access?
  • What do they have access to?
  • Access
  • Must be established and controlled by IT.
  • Cost
  • Tech Support
  • Knowledge pool

11
Client / Server Applications in the Media Center
  • Advantages
  • Added resources without cost because you access
    online
  • Some access controls possible
  • Maintain and provide access to library collection
    info
  • Limitless possibilities for future
  • Servers can be added, upgraded, or replaced as
    needed

12
Client / Server Applications in the Media Center
  • Disadvantages
  • Cost
  • Initial set up
  • Lack of availability of programs
  • Are the programs desired available?
  • Limitations of capacity
  • May have to upgrade periodically
  • Maintenance of system
  • Knowledge pool IT training

13
Conclusion
  • Client / Server software architecture is
versatile and is intended to improve usability,
    flexibility, and operations.
  • Allows purchase of necessary programs while
    providing others through server connections
    online.
  • Allows many computers to attach to a server and
use unlimited resources at the same time.
