FUT Lab set-up in China
  • Short summary of objective
  • install a FUT lab in China, operational by end
    2006.
  • that serves the local plant needs (technical
    assistance, competition samples, complaints,),
    and builds up contacts with Chinese research
    institutes.
  • Originally (January 2006) foreseen with a initial
    staffing /- 9 people.
  • But, during China tour Dominique Neerinck of
    February 2006, an integration of the BCTC lab
    with the FUT-China is foreseen. Hence, number of
    people will be bigger from the beginning
    estimate 20 people by end 2007 (to be discussed).

FUT Lab set-up in China
  •  
  • Phase 1
  • Bekaert will start-up a Technology Laboratory in
    China (Jiangyin) in one of its existing buildings
    (temporary location). This lab will consist of 3
    labs a material lab, a chemical lab and a
    mechanical lab. For each lab we are looking for a
    "RD manager".
  • This lab will be foreseen with new state-of the
    art equipment, purchased on the international
    markets.
  • During this period the RD manager will be
    extensively trained in our Technology Center in
    Belgium.

  • Phase 1 takes from 04.2006 till 03.2007.
  •  
  • Phase 2
  • Upon arrival of the equipment purchased during
    phase 1 the laboratory activities will start to
    support the fast growth of Bekaert's business in
    China. In a first phase these activities will be
    directed towards problem solving, complaint
    handling, competitor analysis, raw material
    analysis, process improvements,...
  • The RD manager should know the production
    processes in order to be able to provide the
    necessary answers to the business.
  • At the same time, the RD manager will be
    responsible for training the people that will
    operate the equipment.

  • Bekaert constructs a new Technology Building and
    creates herewith the Bekaert Asian Technology
    Center.
  •  
  • Phase 2 takes from 09.2006 till end 2007.
  • At the end of period 2 around 20 people work in
    the lab.

Function descriptions for the RD managers
  • Description
  • He/she will develop insight/knowledge on product
    properties, on the measurement of the properties
    and on the relevance of specific properties for
    applications.
  • He/she will therefore participate as team member
    in process and product development processes
    (production support for problems, complaints,
    competition samples, routine tests), exchange
    ideas with his/her team and collect external
    input (e.g. literature and cooperation programmes
    with universities and other institutes) in order
    to understand (and develop) measurement
    techniques and methods.
  • He/she will debrief about developments in
    material characterisation to the internal
    customer.
  • He/she will report to the Lab Manager of the FUT
    China Laboratory
  • He/she will develop his/her cooperators and bring
    them on a high level of excellence in material
    characterisation.
  • He/She will be the publicity board of the FUT
    China Laboratory in contacts with external
    parties such as customers, universities,
    suppliers, authorities,
  • Required Competencies
  • Sufficient knowledge of English (in reading,
    writing and speaking, allowing clear English
    reporting towards BTC and internal customer)
  • University degree (msc or phd) in materials
    engineering or chemistry/chemical engineering,
    mechanical engineering for the 3 cells of the
    lab.
  • Analytic mind.
  • Eagerness to unravel technical problems,
    formulate hypotheses and write clear reports.
    Interested in measurement techniques and
    Measurement System Analysis.
  • Innovative
  • Coach direct reports and participate in teams.
  • Customer focus.
  • Want previous RD experience in industry,
    university or research institute.

Preferred specialization/major
  • Chemical lab.
  • Pure chemistry preferred over applied chemistry.
  • Can be organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry,
    analytical chemistry etc., but no bio-chemistry.
  • Mechanical lab.
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Machine design and automation
