GMS Database
The database consists of all prescriptions on
the GMS for
the whole country

• The GMS payments board codes its medications
  using the World Health Organisation (WHO)
  Anatomical Therapeutic Classification (ATC)
  system.
• The main purpose of the ATC/DDD (defined daily
  dose) system is as a tool for presenting drug
  utilisation statistics with the aim of improving
  drug use. This coding system is used
  internationally and therefore facilitates the
  consolidation of different drug related databases
  containing ATC coded medications.
