Title: Abdul

1
Abdul
Abdul is a key stage 4 student taking the Higher
Diploma in Hospitality in an urban consortium. He
attends the local college for much of his
principal learning and has access to high spec
catering facilities. He is keen to complement his
diploma learning in hospitality with ASL in
Leisure and Tourism it seems to him to be the
obvious combination. In the longer term, his
interest lies more in the field of guest services
or hospitality management rather than the
catering side at least thats what he thinks at
this stage.

Work experience
Project
Abduls work experience was a three week
internship with an events management company
whose main activity took place at the county
cricket ground. The portfolio of business was
varied and comprised conferences, birthday and
wedding celebrations, corporate entertainment. In
addition, the local authority was increasingly
using the premises to provide training spaces so
that every day was busy. Initially, Abdul worked
on the booking side, drawing up estimates for
potential clients and liaising with caterers over
numbers. He later monitored the catering and
cleaning provision for keeping to schedule.

A letter to the local paper set Abdul thinking
about his project. It related to the future use
of a Victorian building in the context of a
larger building development. A community group
was pressing for it to become a café. Abdul
approached the council to research planning
regulations, discovered a funding mechanism that
might apply to such a project and set about
putting together an action plan for establishing
a café. He worked with a colleague who was doing
the BAF diploma, pooling their resources. They
subsequently offered their plan to the community
group highlighting the risks as well as the
possible benefits of such a venture.
Progression route At the outset, Abdul had
assumed that he would progress to a level 3
Hospitality Diploma or perhaps to a travel and
tourism level 3 course. However, by the end of
Year 11, although he thinks that his future may
lie in hospitality, he is interested in extending
his experience. He has looked at what is on
offer in business related courses at level 3. He
has enjoyed the diplomas style of learning and
decides to progress to the Advanced Diploma in
Business, Administration and Finance with a view
to going into HE.
