Title: THE SIBELIUS CONGRESS AND CONCERT HALL

1
THE SIBELIUS CONGRESS AND CONCERT HALL
2
A renovated factory, the Forest Hall, the Concert
Hall and the Congress Wing, being constructed
mainly of wood. Relaxed and simple in details,
the project epitomizes the Finnish view of the
creative use of wood in public buildings
The Concert Hall volume of Sibelius Hall consists
of a wood box within a glass box, and was
designed for world-class acoustics performance.
3
Sibelius Hall in Lahti, Finland, was designed as
the permanent home of the Lahti Symphony
Orchestra. The Orchestra has achieved
international recognition for its performances at
home and on tour, as well as for its widely
hailed series of Sibelius recordings. The hall is
designed to accommodate congress events in
addition to music.

OF THE ROOM IN PREPARATION FOR THE AUDITORIUM.
5
The project posed acoustic and structural design
challenges that required research and adaptation
of state-of-the-art timber design and fabrication
as practiced around the world.
6
The exterior walls of the wood box are inclined
and were designed for mass. 12-in. thick
prefabricated sand-filled panels, each measuring
29 1/2ft.wide and 6ft. high and weighing about
11,000 lb. The sand-filled inclined wood walls
provide a sound insulating value of 63dB,
superior to that of an 8-in. thick concrete wall.
The glass curtain wall provides a further 35dB.

1250 seats 670 on floor 430 on 1st and second
balcony 150 seats at choir balcony

platform which can serve as chorus seating when
required
The hall's length is 82, width 53, and height
approx. 72 (equaling the height of an 8-storey
apartment building).

MASSIVE MATERIALS
Artec provided the designs for the theatrical
aspects of Sibelius Hall, including the
sightlines and seating, performance lighting
system, the sound and communication systems,
orchestra and chorus platforms, and the platform
extension and piano lifts. Artec's design
incorporates a number of features that allow
great variability of acoustic, including a moving
acoustic canopy, and acoustic control curtains
and acoustic banners.
9
SPACIOUSNESS AND REVERBERANCE
Sibelius Hall also incorporates reverberance
chambers which assist in adjusting the room's
acoustics to match a particular repertory or
ensemble
Acoustic control curtains within the auditorium
can be extended to absorb some of the reverberant
energy, creating the "dry" environment needed for
amplified speech or for certain music events
The hall is embraced by hinged doors that can be
set to varying degrees of openness, allowing
sound to pass in and out of the chambers
The hall's length is 82, width 53, and height

INTIMACY-REVERBERANCE-WARMTH-ENSEMBLE AND CLARITY
As a speciality, there is a canopy above the
podium. The canopy has electric control to adjust
its location height, and it is equipped with
lights, loud speakers and different kinds of
reflecting surfaces. It is constructed of three
units (central circle and two crescent-shaped
side elements) and it covers half of the main
hall's entire surface area. The canopy weighs,
with the technical equipment, 25-30 tons. The
lower surface of the canopy has a 2.5 inches wood
lamination. The main function of the canopy is
to control the musical sound in the main hall.
For a rock concert, the canopy will be raised far
up, and for chamber music, it will be brought
down, close to the orchestra. The canopy is
controlled behind the scene and it also has a
sprinkler system connection. The structural
elements for the canopy will be supplied by
Riskotec Oy, Helsinki. INTIMACY-REVERBERANCE-
LOUDNESS
The three-piece adjustable acoustic canopy
facilitates on-stage communication among the
musicians and can adjust the response of the
performance end of the room to suit individual
musical works

ENSEMBLE
The inner walls of the main hall are mainly of
laminated plywood and there is a parquet floor
The shoe box form of the hall, containing an
oval-shaped space for the audience and the
performers, is acoustically an optimal solution.
The chosen furniture, fittings and materials also
effect the hall's acoustic qualities.
