11What is AR?
AR stands for Accelerated Reader. Students will
be required to read books within their reading
range and test on them. The tests are
computerized and test primarily on reading
comprehension. The goal is not to make 100 on
every test but keep an average of 85 or higher.
This shows that the tests are offering a
challenge to your child and are not too easy. AR
is a motivational tool to encourage the love of
reading.
12What are Hop to the Top math facts?
Math Timed Tests consist of math fact problems
(addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division). Students are given 5 minutes to
complete 100 problems. Once a student masters
that level, they will hop up to the next fact
level. The goal of timed tests is to help
students learn math facts and eventually stop
using fingers to count.
13What is Mountain Math?
Mountain Math is a math program that our school
uses to help accelerate or review math skills.
The skills may not be known to the student at
first, but they are picked up quickly. The skills
are introduced slowly and not all at once. The
students have fun exercising their brains and
learning more challenging math. You will be
amazed at what your child will be able to do.
14Can I come read to the class?
Parents are welcome to become Reading Buddies
for our class. Let your teacher know if you are
interested. Also, if your line of work relates to
our curriculum, we would love for you to come in
and share your experiences with us. Holidays are
a great time to read or do an art activity with
the class too. Contact us so that we can schedule
a day and time.
15Can I have lunch with my child?
Yes, parents are encouraged to come on occasion
throughout the year and have a lunch date with
your child. Your child would love to share with
you what they have been learning in class over a
big slice of pepperoni pizza. Lunch times are on
the RRE/2nd grade website.
