13What do these things have in common?
Jesus spits in the dirt, makes some mud, and rubs
it in the eyes of a blind man Elisha sends
Naaman the Syrian to immerse himself 7 times in
the Jordan River A priest anoints you with olive
oil when youre sick God became a human being
nursed at his mothers breast, lived a human
life, suffered death and was buried in a
grave Were baptized in water We eat bread and
drink wine at worship People are censed in
Anglican worship services People stand, sit,
kneel, genuflect, raise their hands, make the
sign of the cross
14Sacraments
God is spirit yet God created a material world,
filled it with material girls and material boys,
and loves to transform our lives using material
things. God works not just in theology, but in
things. Not just doctrine, but dust. Not
just spirit, but stuff. The outward, visible
sign of an inward, spiritual reality. The Creator
uses the Creation in order to deepen our
Connection.
15Sacraments
Sacrament (BCP, p. 857) Outward and visible
signs of inward and spiritual grace Grace (BCP,
p. 858) God's favor toward us, unearned and
undeserved by grace God forgives our sins,
enlightens our minds, stirs our hearts, and
strengthens our wills. Sacraments are means of
grace they are neither causal, magical,
sufficient nor necessary conditions God uses
common things interacting with our physical
senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) to
touch us Water, food, human touch, marriage,
service, oil, incense
16Sacraments
Traditional Major Sacraments Holy Baptism Holy
Eucharist Traditional Other Sacraments Confirmati
on Ordination Holy Matrimony Reconciliation Unctio
n God does not limit himself to these rites
they are patterns of countless ways by which
God uses material things to reach out to us.
(BCP, p 861).

God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and
earth.
25Baptismal Covenant
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our
Lord. He was conceived by the power of the
Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
died, and was buried. He descended to the
dead. On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again
to judge the living and the dead.
26Baptismal Covenant
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I
believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons,
