Title: Intertribal Wellness Center
1Intertribal Wellness Center
- A place to create healthy communities
2Strengths In Our People and Communities
- In spite of all attempts to make it otherwise, we
are still here - Our culture, spiritual being is a source of
strength - There is a will, growing understanding of our
power to make ourselves well - There is an inner strength, adaptability and
tolerance
3The Circumstances
- We have too many wounded souls in our midst
- These souls have problems with alcohol, drugs,
mental health - Their spirits are lost, there is little hope in
their hearts - There are many healthy people with too few
resources for healthy living
4A Philosophy of the Indian Ways
- The whole person needs to be healed, we cannot
heal pieces and expect the whole to be well - The persons spiritual well being is paramount
- Alcoholism, mental illness, feelings of
hopelessness are expressions of the problem, not
the problem - Our families and communities are suffering from
effects of these expressions of the problem.
5A Philosophy of Indian Ways
- Inclusion is the way
- Adaptation to the circumstances is a special
talent of Indians - Tolerance for differences among us is our way
- The Tribe, clan, family well being is the goal in
our actions.
6Our Opportunity
- The Thunderchild facility is available
- It is being turned over to the Tribal Leaders
Council - The continuum of care philosophy, approach, use
of the land and facilities, are wide open - This is an opportunity to create an affordable
residential recovery program - This is our opportunity to create a place for job
training, spiritual renewal, a retreat facility
for Tribal colleges, whatever we want
7The Sky is the Limit
8The Facility
- 638 Acres
- 3 connected buildings with potential space for
100 clients. - Two separate wells
- Kitchen facilities and food storage
- Energy efficient construction

9InterTribal Wellness Center
10Other potential functions of the InterTribal
Wellness Center
- Work skills building for treatment clients
- Industry incubation site for Tribal enterprises
- Spiritual retreat center for all Tribal members.
- Site for developing mentoring programs
- Meeting site for Tribal groups
11This is a wasted resource!!
- We currently have one facility that offers
residential care in our area - There is a waiting list at Crystal Creek Lodge in
Browning - We need more residential treatment and recovery
services in our own area, with our own cultural
input
12Together the Tribes can collaborate to create a
model substance abuse treatment program that will
be the envy of all Indian Country
13Together we can stretch the Tribal treatment
dollars
- Reduced treatment costs by supplementing income
at the Center - Cost of transportation covered by existing ATR
grant - Coordinated residential, outpatient and recovery
support services are known to increase sustained
sobriety necessary for healing
14Necessary requirements for a successful
collaboration
- Tribal Leaders must assume ownership of the
coordination - Tribal Chemical Program Directors must have major
input into the nature of the program and
coordination of services and serve as an ongoing
advisory board. - Each Tribes customs and spiritual beliefs must
be honored and accommodated
15Necessary requirements for a successful
collaboration (contd)
- Treatment planning must be thorough and created
collaboratively amng the CD referring staff and
the InterTribal Wellness Center (ITWC) staff. - The client is the Tribes client, the ITWC is a
treatment resource for the Tribe. - All staff will be trained in continuum of care
16Responsibilities of the Tribal Leaders
- Oversee the InterTribal Wellnes Center (ITWC) so
that it serves the needs of their respective
communities. - Help plan the uses of the facility for
enterprises and self-sustaining capabilities - Serve as Board of Directors for the facility
