  • Negative phase storm Joule heating in the
    auroral region ? upward expansion of neutral
    atmosphere ? Loss of ionospheric O.
  • Positive phase storm (1) Equatorward neutral
    winds drag plasma along field lines, or, (2)
    Polar neutral atmosphere lands at the equator ?
    decreases N2 ? reduces recombination ? increases
    electron density.
  • Seasonal effect polar cap sunlit ? higher
    conductivity ? stronger joule heating.

SUMMARY
  • We know from ENA, EUV and radar measurements,
    that the ring current is significant in producing
    the SAPS E-fields that will effect the
    plasmapshere dynamics.
  • Are there ionospheric E-fields that spread to
    lower latitudes in the evening sector during
    storm mainphases that will effects the enhanced
    near-equatorial storm electron densities as seen
    in the global TEC maps?
  • Cross-disciplinary effort highly needed!
