MCAS STRATEGIES
1. Read each questions carefully. Underline as
you read.
2. Eliminate as many wrong choices as you can
More
3
3. See if the answers can help you answer the
question. Ex. 2n50 Find n? Test each
answer. a) 10 b) 36 c) 25 d)
-25
4. Change answers only if you have a good reason
5. Check frequently to make sure you are
answering the questions in the right spot.

TIPS FOR MATH QUESTIONS
5
TIPS FOR MATHEMATICS QUESTIONS
Look for shortcuts. For example, if the
question is asking for the prime factorization of
a number and you forget how to find it, look at
the choices. Prime is a key word in that
question so the answer must have all prime
numbers.
Replace an unusual symbol with its definition.
Example ll (parallel)
Work in consistent units. If one side of a
rectangle is given in inches and another in feet,
convert them both to feet or inches before you
multiply or add etc.
Don't do all the computations in your head.
More
6
Take the time to figure out what is really
being asked. Label what variables and number
represent. Write all of your work down.
Draw and label pictures to help you answer some
questions (especially geometry) .
7
Open Response
8
Open Response
  • Keep your response neat and organized
  • Restate the question
  • If you cant answer the question, write
everything you know about the question asked
even if it does not directly answer the question.
    Give definitions and examples.

Question
A. Make a sketch of a pattern for a triangular
prism. Label each line segment with a length that
will make it possible to fold the pattern into
the triangular prism.
B. Make a sketch of a pattern for a cylinder.
Label each line segment and diameter in your
pattern with a length that will make it possible
to create the cylinder from the pattern.
10
The following question is an example of a student
response. This student does not know how to draw
the sketch.
11
A. Make a sketch of a pattern for a triangular
prism. Label each line segment with a length that
will make it possible to fold the pattern into
the triangular prism.
A.
A. A triangular prism is a 3 dimensional shape.
It has triangles on each side. A triangle is a
polygon with three sides. All of the angles of a
triangle add up to 180 degrees. Another word for
a pattern is called a net. A net is a flattened
out version of the shape. It shows all of the
sides of the shape.
12
B. Make a sketch of a pattern for a cylinder.
Label each line segment and diameter in your
pattern with a length that will make it possible
to create the cylinder from the pattern.
A. An example of a cylinder is a soup can. It is
a three dimensional circular shape. The diameter
of a circle is the distance from one end of a
circle to the other. However, the diameter, must
pass through the center of a circle.

DOs and DON'Ts
14
Do.
Bring a pencil Use the process of elimination
to make educated guesses Look at all the
choices before selecting one as an answer Put a
check next to a difficult problem and come back
to it later
Go to bed early
Eat a good breakfast
15
Don't...
Stay up late the night before the test
Worry about your neighbor's answers Skip
questions You know this information, you just
need to take the time to search for it in your
brain.
16
Calculator Tips
17
1. When doing division on a calculator remember
A. Put the numerator in the calculator first
Ex. 2

4

B. Put the number on the inside of the division
house in the calculator
first. Ex.
5 100
5
/
100

18
2. Exponent keys look like . . .
yx

OR
Only works on numbers to the second power.

Rules to Remember
20
RULES TO REMEMBER
1. THE ORDER OF OPERATIONS
2. FRACTION RULES A. You need a common
denominator in and - B. Multiplication
multiply across C. Division take the
reciprocal of the second number and
multiply.
3. DECIMAL RULES

5. EXPONENTS 23 2 X 2 X 2
6. RULES OF POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBERS
7. WHEN YOU SEE AND EQUATION, DRAW A LINE
8. REMEMBER YOUR 2D AND 3D SHAPES
22
9. Mean Average
Mode Most Median Middle (once in
order) Range Highest - Lowest
10. A prime number is one that has only two
factors 1 and itself. Ex. 2 3 5 7
11 13 17 19 23 etc

Tips of the Test
39
Make sure to bubble in the circles
completely. Half colored bubbles may be marked
wrong.
