Who were the Chinooks?
The Chinook Indians lived in the Northwest
of what is now the United States. They lived in
the area that is now Washington and Oregon.

Their Homes and How They Lived
The houses they built were from wood and were
known as pit houses because they were built over
a pit or had underground rooms that were pits.

• These Indians lived in villages in groups called
  clans.

Their Resources and Business

• The Chinook Indians lived near the Columbia
  River. They used the river for carrying their
  goods up and down the area for trading.

Among the goods they traded were
whale goods
canoes called dugouts
jewelry
dried fish
furs
masks
baskets

Potlatches
The Chinook Indians held potlatches which were
celebrations of their wealth. They gave presents
to their guests. Sometimes the clans prepared for
a long time for a potlatch.
