Title: WANTED

1
  • WANTED
  • GCSE AS-LEVEL BIOLOGISTS, CHEMISTS,
    MATHEMATICIANS, PHYSICISTS
  • A WORKSHOP PURE SCIENCES IN THE STUDY OF
  • PLANET EARTH, ITS NATURAL HAZARDS AND RESOURCES
  • Saturday 17 March 2007
  • Invitation The Department of Earth and Ocean
Sciences at the University of Liverpool will be
presenting a full-day workshop for school pupils
and teachers, with the aim of introducing Earth
Sciences to those pupils undertaking pure
sciences. It will benefit science teachers who
teach Earth Sciences (we recognize that teachers
of Earth Sciences include Chemists, Physicists,
Biologists and Geographers). This is a sponsored
event held as one of the Bicentenary Celebrations
of The Geological Society (London) and it is also
sponsored by the Higher Education Academy Subject
Centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental
Sciences. Liverpool has a special relationship
with the geology of granites, as two pioneer
geologists, Professors H.H. Read and W.S.
Pitcher, spent substantial parts of their careers
in the (then) Department of Geology and
revolutionised the ways in which we understand
the development of the continents on which we
    live.
  • The workshop will be suitable for Year 11 and 12
(GCSE/AS-level) science pupils and their teachers
to show how their science can be applied in Earth
Sciences. The aim is to take aspects of science
and show how they can be used to understand the
nature and evolution of planet Earth, the
continents and granite in particular. It will
demonstrate how basic science helps understand
the workings of our planet, and how Geology,
Geophysics and Oceanography may lead to an
    exciting and rewarding scientific career.
  • We propose to present four hands-on workshop
stations and there will be a take-away pack,
including a CD/DVD and manual, to aid teachers of
    Earth Sciences.
  • Workshop Stations (for 140 participants in four
    groups)
  • Molten rock and volcanic eruptions
