- Peace studies is an interdisciplinary field
encompassing the humanities, the Social Sciences,
Social Work, Law and the medical and nursing
faculties. Researchers are concerned with war and
peace, human security and meeting basic human
needs, violence and nonviolence, conflict and
conflict resolution, and preventing violent
conflict. Research takes place at all levels,
from the macro-level examining international
peace work, to the micro-level examining internal
conflict and peace in the individual. - Peace Studies research is centered on the
philosophy that achieving peace is difficult
but possible.

8The Future of Peace Studies at the University of
Calgary
Our Vision To make innovative contributions to
peace studies locally and globally.
- Phase 1 Research Program and Public Outreach,
2006/07 2008/09 - Solidifying the visibility of the Consortium
through quality research and public education
programs is the primary goal of phase one.
Launching a research program, developing a
Certificate in Peace Studies, and continuing,
through our community partnerships, to create
quality public events are our priorities in this
phase. Linked to these priorities is the
ever-present need to secure funding for both our
short-term and our long-term initiatives.
9The Future of Peace Studies at the University of
Calgary
Our Vision To make innovative contributions to
peace studies locally and globally.
- Phase 2
- Securing Research Centre Status and Launching a
Teaching program - (2009/10 - ?)
- We anticipate that after three years, we will
have the funding, the support and the research
record to secure research institute/centre status
on the University campus. Once this status is
secure, our goals will be to enhance our research
program, and develop an interdisciplinary
academic program in Peace Studies for University
of Calgary students. The academic program will
likely take the form of a Minor in Peace Studies,
where students will take a new year-long capstone
course developed by the Centre for Peace Studies
in addition to options from a carefully-selected
list of existing academic courses across U of Cs
faculties. Through these academic initiatives, we
will continue to maintain our relationships
outside the University, co-hosting events and
educational seminars with local and international
peace activist groups. - Â

- Phase 3
- Excellence in Research and Peace Studies Graduate
Program - By phase three, we will have established the
Centre for Peace Studies as a centre for research
excellence in the area of Peace Studies. Our
focus will be on continued excellence in
research, the development of young peace studies
scholars through a Peace Studies graduate
program, and eventually the development of a
full interdisciplinary undergraduate major in
Peace Studies.
