What Makes a Hero
  • A hero is a person who fights for a better cause
  • Harriet Tubman was a great example of a hero .
    She fought for what was right.

The Holocaust
  • The Holocaust is the worst thing that has
    happened to our world in our thoughts.
  • So many people died for no reason.
  • They were Jews, gypsies, and political enemies of
    the Nazis.

  • The Holocaust was one of the worst events in the
    History of the world over six million Jews died
    in the Holocaust

Anne Frank A Holocaust Hero
  • Anne Frank was a Holocaust Hero
  • She taught people what it was like to live as a
    Jew in the 1930s and 1940s by writing her
    experiences in her diary.

Survivors of the Holocaust.
  • My story is about a guy named Shep Zitler. This
    man survived the Holocaust but he went through
    hell before he got out of the Concentration
    Camps. His private hell began six months before
    the war began. The Germans came to Poland. And
    that is when they got Shep.

  • Dr. Jan Karski - was the contact between Polish
    resistance and the Polish Govt in exile.
  • was smuggled into Warsaw ghetto to hear what was
    occurring there.
  • Asked to tell the story to the rest of the world,
    reported on experience to other world leaders,
    including President Roosevelt. To us he was a
    hero.

  • Eva Gellar is a survivor of the Holocaust
  • She jumped off of a death train to escape which
    was a very brave thing to do.

Comparing Heros
  • This man tried to stop Hitler and his evil
    doings. But in the long run his family was
    murdered in 1945.
  • Martin was a hero who survived. He founded a
    church which was named the Confessing Church.

  • Concentration Camps were where Hitler stored Jews
    until he killed them
  • There was over 500 concentration camps in Europe
    alone
  • There was over 300 in the rest of the world
    during the Holocaust

  • In Auschwitz over 1.6 million Jews were killed
  • Over 5000 Non-Jews were also killed

Mauthausen
  • Was a concentration camp
  • Used the worse tactics to kill Jewish people.
  • There was a total of 40,000 of the 119,000
    people who died between 1938- 1945.

  • In all the years of the Holocaust over 6 million
    Jews died
  • Five thousand people who helped Jews were also
    killed

The Black Holocaust
  • Blacks endured terrible hardships and death
    during the Black Holocaust Slavery.
  • Abolitionist groups helped the slaves escape to
    the North using escape routes called the
    Underground Railroad.
  • Slaves and rescuers risked death using the
    Underground Railroad.

  • The Underground Railroad was many escape routes
    for slaves
  • It got its name from a slave owner who said that
    slaves would just disappear as if they went
    underground

  • Throughout all of the 1700 and 1800s slavery was
    a problem that more than fifty percent of African
    Americans faced

  • A conductor of the Underground Railroad was
    called an abolitionist
  • The most well known African American
    abolitionists were Harriet Tubman and Fredrick
    Douglas

  • Thousands of slaves survived the trip on the
    Underground Railroad
  • The picture on the right is a picture of slaves
    that made it to Canada

Heroism Today
  • Heroes can be found anywhere
  • Heroes can rise up out of no where when people
    need them.
  • Martin Luther King was an ordinary preacher who
    became a hero of the Civil Rights Movement.

What We learned About Heroes
  • Throughout history people reacted to some
    conflict and became Heroes. Meip and Mr. Franks
    other workers helped the Frank family for two
    years with risk to their own lives.
  • Abolitionists at risk to themselves opened their
    homes to slaves.
  • Heroic stories pop up in the news every day. Our
    world has always had heroes.
