case

• Like you have learned, the subject of a sentence
  is the nominative case. The direct object of a
  sentence is the accusative case. The third case
  you will learn about is the dative case. It is
  used for indirect objects in a sentence, which
  express the idea of someone or for someone.

• You have probably seen examples of the dative
  case with definite articles after prepositions
  (ex. mit dem Bus, mit der U-Bahn). Definite
  articles may also be used with proper names in
  the dative case.
• Was kaufst du dem Martin? Ich kaufe ihm ein
  T-Shirt.
• Gibst du der Sandra das Geld? Ja, ich gebe ihr
  morgen das Geld.

Using the dative case in sentences

• Notice the word order when you use the dative
  case. The indirect object (dative) comes before
  the direct object (accusative)
• Ich schenke meiner Mutter ein Buch.
• Ich schenke ihr ein Buch.

Ein Wenig Landeskunde

• Birthdays are important occasions in German-
  speaking countries and are usually celebrated
  with family and friends.
• In some areas of Germany (primarily in strongly
  Catholic areas) and in Austria, the Namenstag, or
  Saints Day, is also celebrated.
• Children in these areas are named after certain
  saints, such as Johannes, Josef, and Maria.
• There is a saints day for each day of the year.
  Anyone named for a saint celebrates on the day
  that honors that saint.
• The Namestag celebration is similar to a birthday
  celebration, w/ a party, gifts, and flowers to
  the honoree.

Ein Wenig Landeskunde

• Local numbers in Germany usually have 4-7 digits
  depending on the size of the city or town.
• Long distance calls ( Ferngespräche) require an
  area code (Vorwahlnummer).
• Calling from the U.S. to Germany you have to
  first dial 01149, then the Volwahlnummer w/o the
  zero, and then the number.
• Calling from Germany to the U.S. you must first
  dial 001 and then the area code and number.
• How would you tell a German exchange student to
  reach you by phone after he or she returns to
  Germany?
