• The coronation of Charlemagne on Christmas Day in
  800 was symbolic of changes in Europe after the
  fall of the Western Roman Empire. In the heart of
  the old Roman Empire, the head of the Christian
  Church had crowned a Germanic king as emperor. By
  his action, the pope kept alive the ideal of a
  unified empire like that of ancient Rome. Roman
  traditions were just one of the forces.
