3
History
  • Cambridge started as an Anglo-Saxon settlement on
    the river Cam.
  • In 1068 William the Conqueror built a castle
    here.
  • In 1284 Hugh de Balsham, Bishop of Ely founded
    Peterhouse, the first college
  • And from then the story of the town and the
    university became one.

4
Town and Gown
  • Although the town had been established first,
soon there was a rivalry between the university (
    Gown) and the townsmen (Town)
  • There were clashes between the students and the
townsmen, and although they were both guilty the
students were always dealt with more leniently,
as they had wealthy and influential patrons.

5
The University and colleges
  • The University consists of many colleges
  • Each student has to be a member of a college,
where he/she lives and has formal dinners at
least for the first university year.
  • The students go to lectures in their department
but are supervised by their tutors in their
    college.
  • They also use the library and chapel facilities
    in the college

6
Kings College
  • One of the most famous colleges with the most
    beautiful chapel

7
Kings College Chapel
  • On Christmas Eve Kings College Chapel has its
largest congregation as all over the world people
tune to BBC radio to listen to the Festival of
    Nine Lessons and Carols.

8
The Altar
  • In 1961 Sir Peter Paul gave Rubens Adoration of
the Magi (1634) to the chapel to make it
accessible to public eye. The contrast of the
colour of the painting and the stained glass
    windows is astonishing.

9
Trinity College
  • This is the largest college in Cambridge and
Oxford. It was founded by Henry VIII after the
    dissolution of the Monasteries.

10
Christs College
  • This was the first college which accepted
pensioners, students who paid for their board
but were taught by a lecturer appointed by the
    college.

11
Queens College
  • This college was founded three times, once by the
rector of a church and twice by two different
    queens. It is well founded!!!

12
Clare College
  • This college has the most beautiful garden among
    all other colleges.
  • The garden spreads from the college building to
the river bank near The Backs.

13
The Backs
  • The Backs generally refers to the area along
the river Cam. When the colleges were built their
magnificent gates faced the street and their
backs overlooked the river, which led to the
    name The Backs

14
  • The Senate House, the centre of the university
administration and where students graduate at the
    end of their studies.

15
Punting
  • On a sunny summer day one of the best things to
do is hiring a punt and gently gliding down the
    river.
  • You can hire punts from the station at the Silver
    Street Bridge.
  • Dont fall in the river!

16
The Guided Tour
  • The guides are normally very friendly. They are
happy to answer your questions so dont be shy.
They usually take you to colleges where they
explain interesting details about life in
    Cambridge

17
Pubs, restaurants, and tea rooms
  • There are many nice pubs, restaurants and tea
    rooms in Cambridge.
  • They are along Market Street and Kings Parade.
For more detail look at the map on the next slide.

The Open Market
  • The open Market just opposite Kings Parade has
many interesting items, from fruit to paintings,
clothes, toys, second-hand books etc. It is a
good place to spend your left-over cash.
