Hugh Jones, Director of Solutions
6About the Carbon Trust
- The Carbon Trust was set up by government as an
independent company - Our mission is to accelerate the move to a low
carbon economy - We work with organisations to reduce carbon
emissions and develop commercially viable low
carbon technologies - To deliver our mission we bring together public
and private funding and encourage cross sector
partnerships - As a Company Limited by Guarantee any profits we
make are reinvested to help deliver our mission
7Recent temperature increases follow over 1000
years of relative stability and are projected
to accelerate rapidly

8The UK carbon challenge
- The UKs direct emissions of CO2 are 560 million
tonnes (MtCO2) a year - 40 of UK CO2 emissions are created by business
- 5 are from the public sector
- The Governments target is to reduce the UKs
emissions by 60 by 2050 - The move to a low carbon economy presents
significant challenges but huge opportunities
9The Carbon Trusts activities cover 5 main areas
Insights Explaining the low-carbon economy
Enterprises Creating new low-carbon businesses

19Overcoming barriers..
Bear these in mind for the Alumni look to your
programme advisors for guidance
20Barriers People Resource!
- Problem Energy management energy efficiency
seen as peripheral to a Trusts key function -
- Key to raising the profile of carbon management
up to the mainstream the day-to-day business of
the Trust - Key to integrating CM and gaining appropriate
support - Energy Management seen not just as contract
efficiency but proactive demand reduction
NHS Trusts need a dedicated Carbon Reduction
Manager reporting directly to the senior
management team with cross-departmental authority
21Well help you overcome other predictable
barriers..
- Ownership
- Competing priorities
- Lack of funding

67The World Today Quiz
681 Energy
- What percentage of the world's energy is
currently generated from renewable sources? - (including hydropower and biomass)
-
- 5 9 14
69Energy
- Correct answer 14
- Energy is vital for development to date, fossil
fuels have accounted for almost all the growth - Renewables (geothermal, solar, wind, biomass)
contribute 11.5 of current world energy
consumption and 14 if hydropower is included - Wind turbines currently generate over 17,000 MW
of electricity in more than 30 countries - Worldwide shipments of PV cells grew 6-fold
1990-2000
702 Population
- How many people are estimated to be in the
world by 2050? -
- 4.3 billion
- 7.9 billion
- 9.3 billion
71Population
- Correct answer 9.3 billion
- There are now just over 6 billion people on the
planet, up 3.5 billion since 1950 - 2.4 billion are children and teenagers
- UN forecasts growth to 9.3 billion people by
2050, with most growth in developing countries
723 Biodiversity
- Approximately what percentage of the world's
plant species are threatened with extinction? -
- 10 20 30
73Biodiversity
- Correct answer 10
- Nearly 26,000 plant species - about 10 of all
those known - are under threat of extinction. - More than- 1,100 mammals- 1,200 birds- 700
freshwater fish and - hundreds of reptiles and
amphibians are also threatened
744 Emissions
- By what percentage have global CO2
concentrations in the atmosphere increased since
pre-industrial times? -
- 5 28 529
75Emissions
- Correct answer 28
- Concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has
increased from 288 ppm in pre-industrial times to
380ppm in 2005 - Increased atmospheric concentrations of
greenhouse gases - including CO2- are believed to
be raising average global temperatures - This could lead to dramatic and damaging changes
in the climate and local weather storms,
droughts, floods and a rise in sea levels
765 Mobility
- How much () of worldwide energy consumption
is accounted for by the transport of people and
goods? - 10 20 30
77Mobility
- Correct answer 20
- Transport of people and goods accounts for a
fifth of world energy consumption - Passenger air trips have almost tripledin the
last 25 years and are expected to triple again in
the next 20 years - The number of motor vehicles worldwide is
increasing at about 3 pa - Rich countries have 60 times more vehicles per
capita than the average low-income country - but
vehicle ownership has tripled in low income
counties in the past 17 years
786 The Energy Challenge
- How much is global energy demand expected to grow
by 2050? -
- 30 50 100
-
79The energy challenge
- Correct answer at least 100
- Developing countries will need 5 times more
energy - The developed world 10-20 more
- Global GDP is expected to be 4 times larger
