The National Immunization Survey Where is it
Going?

2
The National Immunization Survey (NIS)
  • Already heard what the NIS now does
  • Planned expansions
  • Urban areas beyond the current 28
  • Age ranges besides 19-35 months
  • Special purpose sub-surveys

3
Urban Areas in the Current NIS
4
Urban Areas
  • The NIS has, from 1994 2004, surveyed 50 states
    and 28 selected urban areas
  • Areas selected based on conditions prevailing in
    1994
  • Immunization coverage for urban areas not on this
list can only be estimated as part of larger area

5
Urban Areas, continued
  • Example
  • Suppose we wanted coverage for Denver, CO in 2002
  • Have 2002 coverage for CO
  • Number of children in Denver in 2002 too small
    for reliable estimate
  • Can only give coverage for Denver by combining
multiple years of data (this must be done with
    caution)

6
Urban Areas, continued
  • Would like to add new urban areas beyond existing
    28
  • have no resources
  • Starting in 2005, plan to monitor certain urban
    areas every other year
  • Use freed-up resources to monitor new urban areas
    on off years

7
Urban Areas, continued
  • Current plans
  • Rotated in Denver, Las Vegas, St. Louis, San
    Bernadino, Oakland (2005, 2007, 2009)
  • Rotated out Boston, Indianapolis, Miami, San
Diego, San Jose (will return 2006, 2008, 2010)
  • Other urban areas might be rotated in/out in
    other years
  • Discussions with NACCHO on this matter are
    ongoing

8
Other Age Groups
  • NIS core mission produce state, urban, and
national estimates of coverage for 19-35 month
    old children
  • NIS is moving toward producing national level
estimates of coverage for other age ranges as
    well
  • Estimates by state or large race/ethnicity groups
    is a goal

9
Other Age Groups, continued
  • Additional age ranges
  • Adults aged 65 years (2003, 2004)
  • Adults aged 50-64 years (2004)
  • Adolescents aged 13-15 years (2004)
  • Hope to continue these surveys in future years

10
Special Purpose Supplements (Topical Modules)
  • Subsamples of NIS survey can be asked
    special-purpose questions
  • insurance status day care and breast feeding
    attitudes and beliefs (2001, 2002)
  • vaccine safety vaccine shortage (2003)
  • vaccine safety vaccine shortage and childhood
    influenza (2004)

11
Special Purpose Supplements, continued
  • The 2004 NIS survey of adults aged 65 years
includes questions to assess cancer screening
(done in partnership with the National Cancer
    Institute).
  • Although no plans exist, similar partnerings
    might occur in the future.

12
Conclusion
  • Historically NIS provided immunization coverage
for 19-35 month old children in a fixed group of
    geographic areas
  • Vision for the future NIS provides immunization
(and occasionally other public health) related
data for many age ranges, for many geographic
    areas
