- This information pack provides information on the
causes of fires and the action to take to
minimise the risk. - You will also find information on the correct use
of fire extinguishers.
4Fire Safety
- All child care settings should take steps to
ensure the safety of children, staff and others
on the premises in the case of fire, including
drawing up a clearly defined procedure for the
emergency evacuation of the premises.
5Fire Evacuation
- A fire evacuation must take into account the
following considerations - The ages and grouping of children
- The mobility of children and staff
- Children who are resting or sleeping
- Where children are located in the building, for
example upstairs - Staff breaks
- Where the register is kept
- The procedure for alerting the emergency
services
6Fire Precautions Regulations
- The Fire Precautions Regulations 1999 require
that all workplaces should be inspected by the
fire authority to check means of escape, fire
fighting equipment and warnings, and that a fire
certificate must be issued.
7Advice for Child Care Settings
- It is crucial to be aware that children can start
a fire in moments but only if they can get hold
of materials that can start fire. - What follows are nine key pieces of advice on
what should be done to ensure all children in
your care are safe from the risk of fire.

- Keep matches and lighters out of reach (and out
of sight) of children - Position lighted candles out of reach of children
- Put a childproof fireguard in front of an open
fire or heater - Dont let children play or leave toys near a fire
or heater - Put child locks on cupboards that have anything
in them that children could use to start a fire.

- Unplug appliances that children could trip over
- Put plug guards into sockets so children cant
stick things into the holes - Keep your escape route clear of toys and other
obstructions. - Dont leave children alone
10Fire Blankets
- Fire blankets are fire-resistant sheets of
material.They can be used to cover a fire to
cut its supply of oxygen or wrap a person whose
clothes are on fire.
11Colour Coding of Fire Extinguishers
- As a result of merging European Standards, the
system for colour coding fire extinguishers has
changed. -
- All New fire extinguishers will be coloured red.

- The contents of a Fire Extinguisher will be
indicated by the colour of the label or a band
around the body of the fire extinguisher. - This label or band will usually correspond with
the old colour code.
