Title: The Laboratory Stewards set up and maintain a system such that
1Tasks of Lab Stewards, Safety Stewards
- The Laboratory Stewards set up and maintain a
system such that - i) instruments are switched off at the end of
the day - ii) every experiment that must continue
overnight is covered by an overnight experiment
card that is properly displayed - Safety Stewards take care of the Safety issues
and meet regularly with the Safety Committee (
Safety Stewards Peter van Dijk, Floris Rutjes,
Martin Feiters) - Monthly meeting, next October 29
2Check-in, check-out
- New people starting in the lab should check in,
i.e. make themselves acquainted with the safety
procedures, and sign a statement that they have
done this confidentiality agreement
internship form - People leaving the lab should check out i)
remove data from computers ii) clean and
return equipment iii) store their chemicals
properly - iv) return door pass
- and sign a statement that they have done this.

5Emergency Exits
- Two emergency exits for every lab wing
- Two normal entrances/exits for every lab room,
where lab workers and visitors can pick up/leave
coats and glasses - The doors on the side of the lab rooms are
emergency exits only
6General Procedures (1)
- Do not do chemical work alone.
- Always wear glasses and lab coats. Have your lab
coat cleaned regularly (monthly) - Rinse the glassware that you want to dispose of,
or let the solvent evaporate in a fume cupboard.
Remove the labels/make them illegible, pay
particular attention to the danger codes - Do not be overeconomic with disposable gloves
when you use gloves for an experiment in the fume
cupboard, dispose of your gloves when you start
doing something else. Pay attention to the type
of gloves (latex ? nitrile ?) that is appropriate
for your experiment.
7General Procedures (2)
- Cyanide we have the antidotes but only a medical
doctor is allowed to apply them - Keep gas cylinders fixed and in an upright
position - Be aware of the danger of asphyxation when large
amounts of liquified gases (N2, He) are quenched - Outside working hours, the fume cupboards are
controlled by a timer. Switch it on when you work
late, and off when you leave. - Keep i) the chemical laboratories tidy, but also
- ii) the instrument rooms (NMR and other)
- iii) the office space
- iv) the toilets
8Instrument Room 03.411
- The Instrument Room 03.411 (CD spectrometer,
Langmuir troughs, DSC, DLS, etc.) does not have
proper ventilation - Organic solvents may be handled in the small fume
cupboard but it must be switched on - After use the fume cupboard must be switched off
and tidied up - Tidy up the instruments and the space around it
after use - Do not leave organic solvents in the Instrument
Room (because it is not ventilated) but take them
back to your own lab to dispose of them

11Accidents and Failures
- Report all accidents to the Safety Committee, so
that repeated accidents cannot be dismissed as
incidents - For the same reason, send an additional Email
message to 33333_at_science.ru.nl every time you
have phoned 33333 (UFB) to ask for help with a
failure, and copy it to Martin Feiters and Peter
van Dijk
