Accidents often due to neglect of precautions and
regulations

• Safety goggles must be worn in the laboratory

• corrosive solutions
• glass vacuum apparatus
• potentially unstable solutions

• quenching
• handling molten metals, salts....
• pouring liquid nitrogen
• fracture experiments

Toxic and Dangerous Materials

• all chemicals regarded as toxic
• gloves, gauntlets, laboratory coats
• avoid inhalation of vapours
• wash hands when leaving
• use fume cupboards

If in doubt, ask first

• Academic or technical staff
• Risk and COSHH assessments should be viewed prior
  to experiments

• trained first aiders
• accidents must be reported

Smoking, eating and drinking

out-of-hours working

• during term working hours are 0900-1245
  1400-1700
• No laboratory access outside these hours
• use of computers permitted out of hours

• Safety test
• Wipe cards to the basement door from Principal
  Assistant (D. Duke, T401)
• Sign in and out

• Special regulations for working in research
  laboratories
• Close consultation with Supervisor
