What is the Core Curriculum?

• Standards of learning essential for ALL students
• Ideas, concepts and skills for subsequent
  learning
• Attitudes and dispositions that lead to the
  development of positive character traits

Why a Core Curriculum?

• The Core
• Identifies what ALL students need to know and be
  able to do
• Provides foundation skills for future learning
• Helps to avoid repetition
• Provides equal access for ALL students throughout
  the state

Core Advisory Committee

• The role of this group is to provide guidance on
  the outcome of the revision process
• Includes individuals from the PTA, business and
  industry, public education, universities, and
  private organizations interested in education

Core Steering Committee

• The role of this group is to outline and guide
  the Core revision
• Includes teachers, district content specialists,
  university pre-service educators, community
  representatives, and USOE curriculum and
  assessment specialists

Core Writing Teams

• Includes teachers with particular expertise in
  the content area, university content educators,
  and USOE content and assessment specialists
• Members receive professional development specific
  to national standards and writing of content
  standards

• Draft documents are available on-line during the
  revision process
• Draft documents are reviewed by teachers
• Is the content appropriate?
• Is it understandable?
• Does it make sense?
• Can it be taught in the time allotted?
• Draft is reviewed by district personnel
• Are there implementation issues for districts?

Core Curriculum Adoption

• Proposed curriculum is reviewed by curriculum
  committee of the State Board of Education
• Public Focus Groups and Public Hearings are
  conducted
• Recommendations are considered and appropriately
  integrated in to Core
• Final Revision is completed
• Formal Presentation to State Board of Education
  for consideration of approval
